Northern Guild Psychotherapy and Counselling
Northern Guild has been providing a high quality, confidential counselling and therapy service throughout the North East for over 30 years. Led by Christine Lister-Ford & Jennie McNamara, each of whom has been made an Honorary Fellow of UKCP for their services to the profession, our reputation for excellence is based on outstanding expertise, a solid track record and a real commitment to our clients.
Centrally located in both Jesmond, Newcastle and Stockton -on- Tees, you will find our centres comfortable & welcoming, safe and confidential. As an active member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy), Northern Guild ensures that therapists meet the highest professional standards while fulfilling the requirements for on-going professional development.
Training, qualifications & experience
Our approach is based on the belief that human dignity and the capacity for fulfilment are at the heart of all counselling relationships. The job of the therapist is to listen with compassion, understand as another human being, and walk alongside in the journey to a solution. Every journey is different and every destination is unique.
Northern Guild has a team of over 35 therapists who excel in a wide range of approaches. Each is trained and qualified to the highest professional requirements of either BACP or UKCP. Many also have an MSc in Psychotherapy. When you contact us one of our therapists will talk with you about what you are looking for and how you would like therapy to happen. We will discuss with you the best approach for your needs and who from our team we think will be the right therapist for you. If after the first meeting you are not happy with the person we have suggested you can just come straight back to us and we will identify a new therapist with no questions asked. We offer individual, couples, group and family therapy. And we have a specialist team who work separately with children and adolescents. The length of therapy is determined by you.
We are experienced in all approaches from in-depth work for resolving more deep seated difficulties to brief work when a more immediate approach is needed. We have published some of our thoughts about optimum lengths of therapy for different needs. And in conjunction with a local employer have developed a bespoke 3- session model which over a two year period has proven 90% effective in enhancing feelings of well being and identifying ways of solving difficulties.

UK Council for Psychotherapy
The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.
As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.
UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
