About me

I am a qualified Child & Adult psychotherapist. I offer a range of options that include therapy through play for children; walk and talk therapy for adults; and equine assisted psychotherapy, see below for more information.  Experiential and creative therapies can help us reconnect with our selves through our senses, movement and help connect us to this present moment, putting thoughts & worries into the background.

Brain 'Map'
If you are unsure of which therapy or intervention will help you and you have a history of trauma or neglect. An in-depth gathering of information can help you decide a way forward. I can provide a Brain 'map', this involves gathering information from you over four areas; Part A: your history of adversity and trauma: Part B: we look at your history of relationships and how these may have buffered the effects of any trauma and adversity you experienced: Part C: how you are currently functioning in your life and whether there are any struggles with motor control, emotional regulation, relationship and your cognitive abilities: Part D: we discuss together your current relational health.

I offer the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT™). The Neurosequential Model is a developmentally sensitive, neurobiology-informed approach to clinical problem solving. The model, developed by Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, is not a specific therapeutic technique or intervention. It is an approach that integrates core principles of neurodevelopment and traumatology to inform work with children, families and the communities in which they live.  For more information, click here: https://www.neurosequential.com

Therapy with horses is a team approach involving a psychotherapist and a trusted equine specialist with a number of horses in the outdoors. This therapy offers the opportunity to be in a natural environment with animals.  It can help adult and children overcome anxiety, low self esteem, trauma, relationship difficulties and much more. It helps people to be fully present in the moment and provides opportunities for mindfulness.

Therapy with horses can help connect us to our senses, our instincts, our creativity and innate wisdom.  Horses can teach us a lot about communication, relationships and boundaries.  Equine Facilitated Therapy can support people who feel stuck in their lives or who have found that talking therapies do not work for them.  It is useful for teams, groups and as part of continued professional development for professionals working in mental health. Play therapy can help children explore and express themselves through experience. Some children can struggle to talk about what is going on and how they are feeling. Therapy through play can help children communicate at their own level and pace.  The benefits can include a reduction in anxiety, improved self confidence and better relationships with friends and family

Walk and talk therapy can be an effective alternative to room based therapies for adults and teenagers. Some people are more comfortable to talk while walking side by side in a nature based environment. This approach can help reduce depression and social anxiety through the patterned movement of walking calming the lower areas of the brain that mediate stress.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Adult & Child Psychotherapist, registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy. I have over 25 years of working with people who have experienced emotional distress, trauma and developmental neglect.

I started in this field as a youth worker in the 1990's, training in person centred counselling and working in a youth enquiry service. I went onto work in addiction for a local charity where I was introduced to Transactional Analysis (TA). I started training in 1999 to become a psychotherapist. I qualified as a Certified Transactional Analyst in 2008.

I went on to develop an interest in trauma, when working with children in residential care. I trained in somatic trauma therapy with Babette Rothschild in 2005, gaining a diploma. This training brought my focus to the body and how trauma effects our physical health. Trauma creates sensitisation of the stress response symptom that controls our central nervous system. People can experience tension, physical illness and/or disconnection from their bodies and emotions. Helping people reconnect with their inner world is an important part of how I work. I am interested in polyvagal theory, somatic experiencing, meditation and how the natural environment can help reconnect us to who we are..

I have worked in a wide range of settings - youth work, addiction, residential child care, therapeutic communities, charities, private practice, staff development & with groups.

I also offer an experiential approach that involves horses in the outdoors. This is an effective alternative to talking therapies. It works well with children, adolescents and adults who have experienced developmental trauma. It can be powerful approach with groups and teams. It is a team approach and very much a partnership between a trusted equine specialist and a number of horses. I started training and using this approach in 2005 when working with high risk teenagers. I am Advanced Certificated with EAGALA, Equine Assisted Growth & Learning Association - this is their highest level of certification.

This approach is available near to Lockerbie and at Denton Hall Farmhouse, Low Row, Brampton, Cumbria.

Further information

I have an interest in trauma and how overwhelming stress impacts on our bodies often emerging as anxiety, overworking & thinking. People might find it difficult to switch off and focus on the present moment. Equine assisted psychotherapy brings you right into this moment through connection with nature, animals and our sea sea. Horses can teach us so much about being fully present. They offer opportunities to raise our awareness, regulate our emotions and stress levels which we can use in our lives outside of therapy.

Listen to my podcast to find out what Therapy with Horses is, what happens when you meet me and my team and what the foundations are for this amazing interaction that can help you overcome issues such as depression or anxiety.
