Colin McGuinness Chartered Counselling Psychologist
My work as a counselling psychologist could best be described as blending the therapeutic skills of a psychotherapist or councillor with the scientific understanding of the human mind that comes from my training as a psychologist.
I describe myself as an Integrative psychotherapist because I draw from all those models described above working alongside my clients to help them achieve their goals.
My career over the previous 20 years has given me experience in working with a wide variety of settings including prisons, head injury and stroke, chronic pain programmes.
For 13 years I worked in a Community Mental Health Team treating people with severe mental health conditions.
I now work full-time in private practice specialising in trauma and anxiety conditions.
Training, qualifications & experience
Counselling psychology training requires a doctorate level training in the science of psychology alongside extensive, in-depth training in psychotherapy. In total this takes around 7 years and is examined at various points during that training. In my case, this led to a Masters degree in counselling psychology from City University, London followed by a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology from the British Psychological Society, who conferred Chartered Psychology status.
In order to achieve Chartered status as a Counselling Psychologist I was required to train in supervised practice in three distinct therapeutic models. I chose Cognitive Behavioural (CBT), Systemic, and Psychodynamic models.
Since that initial training, I have also been fully trained in Eye Movement Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).
Areas of counselling I deal with
