About me

I have considerable experience of working positively with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, relationship breakdown, eating disorders, abuse, family issues, Low self-esteem/confidence, Trauma/PTSD, Stress, sadness, Loneliness and Anger management. These are issues which need gentle, effective and compassionate understanding, enabling them to diminish and the client to gradually develop a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

About me
I was born here but brought up in Uganda, which has meant that I have an affinity with that continent and its people. I have experienced mental-ill health myself, have had my own children (with teenage difficulties and eating disorders), and now grandchildren, I've taught and run businesses. I am a keen gardener, growing all our fruit and veg, and attuned to Nature and our environment, exploring our place within it.  I have worked for many years in the NHS and in private practise, and see my clients in a wooden cabin in my garden a few miles north of Hereford, where it's very peaceful.

My Approach to Counselling
I believe that there is no definition of ‘a normal person’, as I believe that we are all unique, as are the pain and difficulties in our lives, so the way forward is also going to be unique. Therefore my aim is to support and assist the individual in finding their own ways to addressing their difficulties so as to live a fuller, more satisfying life. To assist in this I use various 'tools': including Gestalt chair-work, Journaling, Bodywork and Visualisation. But I aim to be very gentle as we have defences for a reason, therefore they need to be respected and recognised, which gradually allows things to change.

The Counselling Process
My usual aim is for a long-term sustainable healing of the individual, not just a short-term alleviation of the symptoms. The Psyche is a self-healing mechanism that usually needs the space of Empathy and Love to rebalance and self-heal. This process may take time and the sustained experience of being 'heard', for the healing to gently and unconsciously penetrate the depths where the roots of the pain and disfunction are often hidden. Rome wasn't built in a day!

Testimonials

'The power of sharing your emotions and ideas with another person makes counselling something that is definitely worth a try. A counselor acts as a neutral support who can help you to find truth and clarity within your own thoughts. In my experience, Clare is one of the best'. (Julia)

'At a time when my world was falling down around me, my weekly sessions with Clare kept me going and were a source of re-energisation. Covering more ground than I had ever considered, Clare is the best psychotherapist I have come across. Combining a wealth of knowledge and experience, Clare is extremely professional. She also has a very human, un-clinical quality about her. She really cares and has genuine kindness in her eyes and soul, but still tells you how it is when necessary. I would not hesitate in recommending her.' (Paul)

'Clare helped me to listen to anxiety in a positive way in order to make constructive changes and find out where I needed to make changes in my life. Her thoughtful, spiritual approach was great and worked wonders'. (Jeremy)

'My sessions with Clare enabled me to accept my illness, not feel so threatened by it, and see that I can still have a positive enjoyable life. I felt able to drop the mask and talk about my perceptions of life and what is. I found I became less vulnerable and more stable and grounded.' (Suzie)

'I came to see Clare when I couldn't get to work and my life was falling apart. Quite quickly I was able to see a way to returning to work and over the next few months found ways of addressing and solving the other issues in my life. I found Clare's encouragement and support invaluable in finding my way forward'. (Maria)

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist, trained in Psychosynthesis – an holistic approach to healing based on synthesising our four main aspects: Body, Mind, Emotions and Spirit. This involves using an eclectic mix of techniques and approaches, to explore our different, often conflicting parts of ourselves, thus enabling us to reach a more coherent and meaningful sense of ourselves and our life. I am also a Reiki Master, use Mindfulness and Embodied techniques.

My Experience
I have over 10 years experience - in the NHS, with University students and in private practice. I am a member of BACP, working towards accreditation.
I have had particular experience with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, anger, eating disorders, addictions and the breakdown of relationships. The root causes of which are  generally in painful experiences. I've found that by listening, acknowledging and understanding these issues, it is possible to reach beyond and free-up energy for living today.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
