Hi and thanks for looking at my counselling page. My name is Claire and I am a qualified Person Centred Counsellor.
I’m a warm, non-judgemental, empathic and compassionate person. These qualities are invaluable to me in my work. I love my job and feel truly humbled when clients trust me with their life-story, both their struggles and triumphs. My clients tell me that I make it really easy for them to talk about their difficulties and this makes my heart smile! That’s because being non-judgemental, easy to talk to and being truly and empathically interested in other people is such a really important part of the Counselling relationship.
Being Person Centred means I really do believe that people have the inner strength and resources to overcome anything; but we may have lost touch with these and sometimes we need support to access them again. So Counselling is not about me telling someone what to do or how to do it. Counselling is about me offering a safe, respectful environment where you can share your problems and explore ways of dealing with them and develop new skills to help you do this.
Counselling often involves talking about very difficult, painful life events, feelings, thoughts, emotions, behaviours and relationships. Therefore, it’s really important that you find a counsellor who you can trust and feel comfortable with.
For the reason above - I offer a free initial appointment of around 20 minutes either face to face or over the phone.
What you can get from Counselling?
Counselling offers a unique opportunity to explore your life experiences and difficulties to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and others. As your Counsellor I will help you to explore your life-experiences, discover and develop inner strength and skills for yourself rather than ‘paper over cracks’ by simply learning techniques by rote.
I work closely with my clients to support them to find ways to cope and develop new skills and self-understanding. I help them to find confidence in their ability to make choices. I also help them to develop emotional intelligence and learn to manage their emotions and reactions to difficult situations or people.
Overall Counselling improves your mental and emotional wellbeing and this can have a positive effect on your physical health too, seeing as the body and mind are inextricably linked.
Counselling can help improve your life, including your relationship with yourself and with others.
I currently work both privately and for the NHS as a Counsellor. However in the past I have worked within the NHS using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help people overcome depression, anxiety, OCD etcetera. Therefore, although I consider myself to be Person Centred I do have a wealth of knowledge and a ‘tool box’ of different skills to offer clients. These tools include breathing and relaxation techniques, mindfulness, CBT, imagery and visualisation, focusing techniques to explore the ‘felt-sense’ or ‘edge of awareness’ aspects of difficulties that can show up as physical feelings.
Having had therapy myself in the past I know how scary it can be to try to find the right counsellor. I also know what it feels like to make that first step of contacting someone who you have never met before to talk about your innermost personal difficulties. This is not easy, it can be a really nerve-racking experience.
That is why I offer a free initial appointment (around 20 minutes) so that you can meet me, see my therapy room and we can explore your hopes and goals for therapy and whether I am able to help. This is also an excellent opportunity for you to ask any questions you might have and decide for yourself whether it feels right to you to work with me and for me to make sure I can give you the Counselling that you need.
I have worked with many people with a wide range of difficulties such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, OCD, stress. I have also worked extensively with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and have a background of working for the NHS in a Sexual Assault Referral Centre supporting men, women and children affected sexual abuse and/or rape.
My main expertise is in anxiety and depression as these are often intertwined and are the most common difficulties I work with as an NHS therapist. However, I have expertise in relationship difficulties (relational trauma) as problematic relationships are often at the root of (or impacted by) anxiety and depression.
I currently work with clients from Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield and other areas in South Yorkshire

I specialise in Anxiety and Depression as, working in the NHS, I have developed a lot of experience working with these difficulties.
A counselling session is £40.00.
I offer reduced fees (concessions) for students and those on low wages (approx £17,000 and below). I trust clients to pay what they can afford and if you feel you struggle financially then the discounted rate would apply to you.
Sessions last around 50 minutes to an hour and are usually held weekly or fortnightly.
Some clients request a few sessions to focus on a particular issue. Other clients prefer more sessions and longer term therapy.
How many sessions you choose to have is up to you; whether sort-term or longer term, counselling can be a very powerful way to change your life.
I work from my private, comfortable therapy room in a converted building at home. There is plenty of parking on a quiet residential street near to Cortonwood Retail Park.
