About me

Dr Claire Mansfield - Counselling Psychologist (CPsychol, PsychD, MA, BSc

I offer counselling and therapy and a compassionate and sensitive approach for a wide range of personal and emotional difficulties. Based in Berkhamsted, I adapt my sessions to suit the individual client. I work collaboratively with clients to bring resolution, insight and change to emotional and psychological difficulties. Clients choose whether they want short-term or long-term therapy and I will discuss the various therapeutic approaches available. Please note that I only work with adults.

I will ask you questions about the problems you are experiencing and your aims for therapy, in order to develop a therapeutic approach tailored to your specific difficulties and needs. Counselling and therapy enables individuals to talk about painful or difficult experiences in a safe and confidential setting. It may enable you to find new ways of coping or to think about changes that you may want to make. I understand that many individuals come to therapy in distress. I offer clients sensitivity, care and respect and have the highest regard for ethical and non-discriminatory practice.

What is a counselling psychologist?

Counselling psychologists are highly trained professionals who have a minimum of 6 years of full-time training and work with people with personal and psychological difficulties. Counselling psychologists are 'practitioner psychologists', a title protected by law that demands a minimum training criteria of 6 years of full-time training, unlike titles such as counsellor or psychotherapist. Counselling psychologists are trained to offer counselling and therapy, drawing on psychological knowledge and expertise. You can check the HCPC register to check if a professional is registered and that they meet the HCPC standards for professional skills and training at www.hcpc-uk.org/check

Further information

What can I expect from the initial session?

The aim of the first session is to give you an opportunity to meet with me and for us to decide if and how we can work together. It does not obligate you to attend further sessions. I will ask questions about what brings you to therapy and what you are hoping to get out of attending sessions. In this initial session I will explain how I work and discuss confidentiality, cancellations and fees with you. I will invite any questions you may have about my role, training, and experience, or about therapy in general.

It may be important for you to take some time after the session to decide if you want to take it further and book subsequent sessions.
