About me

It’s difficult to describe the therapeutic process without melting into cliché: The journey, the ups and downs, boats upon the ocean. We fall into cliché because it’s not easy to describe a process that can be unique, challenging, and sometimes just profound. I am an outdoorsy person, so I often think of the counselling experience as a garden. It’s a safe, warm space full of colour, where we can seek out our hidden dark corners, our rough weedy patches that need some more care. We’ll spend time exploring and digging, examining what we find, and sometimes planting anew. I’ll challenge you sometimes, but I’ll let you set the pace.

I am an integrative psychotherapist, so I work with a range of techniques based around a core theoretical framework drawing on psychodynamic, humanistic and CBT approaches. As you can probably tell, I am open to working creatively. Ecotherapy - working therapeutically outdoors with nature - is a passion of mine, so feel free to ask about this.

The key factor in therapeutic work is the relationship between counsellor and client (increasingly, research backs this up.) I meet each client genuinely, with warmth and without judgement. I work with an understanding based on rigorous theory and training, combined with gentle curiosity and a shared sense of purpose. A space to explore, to remember, to renew.

Training, qualifications & experience

MSc Therapeutic Counselling, University of Greenwich (2020)

MBACP

I am an experienced indoor and outdoor practitioner with years of full-time on-the-ground work full-time in Edinburgh and London. I seek to constantly grow and undertake regular supervision and mentoring to maintain high professional standards. I have had specific training in trauma and PTSD.

For my outdoor practice, I have undertaken a year-long training in ecotherapy as well as an outdoor first aid course. I am a munro-bagger and hiker in my personal life so I have diverse experience in Scotland's mountains and challenging weather conditions.

I am currently preparing a book chapter on experiences of the unconscious in natural settings, due for publication in 2025.

My first degree was in Classics at Cambridge, and I can't promise I won't bring Greek myths into the mix where it feels helpful.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I offer therapy:

  • Face-to-face
  • Outdoor sessions
  • Online via Zoom as backup or if necessary for distance.

I am offering face-to-face sessions at The Whole Works in central Edinburgh. Contact me for further information, or you can get in touch with the reception there and ask to work with me: https://thewholeworks.co.uk/

Ecotherapy - which means working therapeutically outdoors with nature, perhaps sitting outside, walking, or even gardening while we talk - is a focus of mine and I have experience in a range of ways of working outdoors, both privately and in agency work, as well as research experience in the field. If this is something you'd be interested in exploring as part of therapy work, I'd be happy to discuss it. I often do this as a 'blended mode' where we can switch to online if the weather is just too grim (we have to be realistic in Scotland!)

If any of this sounds interesting then don't hesitate to get in touch and we can explore what might work best for you.

Other areas I can help with include:

  • Anxiety
  • Autism
  • Bereavement
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
