About me

There are times in all our lives when we may need a safe space to talk about ourselves, our lives, or something that is distressing us. Counselling can offer an important and life-enhancing experience when we are at our most vulnerable. Having faced my own struggles and painful experiences in life, the awareness I continue to develop through ongoing counselling, training and supervision gives me the space and clarity to be as present as possible with you.

At the heart of counselling is a relationship that focuses on you. It is about acceptance, trust and empathy, and offers you the space and time to explore whatever you most need to. Through this relationship new possibilities and perspectives can emerge as we work together to make the changes you choose. It is my intention to see and hear the uniqueness of you, built on a belief in your capacity for growth and wellbeing.

Talking about experiences and feelings is a hugely important part of counselling. Being seen and heard for who we are can be very enabling and often what we most need. Sometimes, however, we can get stuck in old patterns that are out-dated and are no longer helping us. Being open, curious and creative in the present moment can often breathe life into stuckness or pain and allow us to engage in new ways of being.

Every relationship between a client and counsellor is unique and I use a flexible approach to adapt to the needs of each individual. The direction we take will be co-created between us and we are likely to explore some of the following:

  • The stories and narratives of your life; untangling different threads to get clearer about who you are, the sense and meaning you've made of your life so far, and how you want to move forward.
  • Your emotional wounds and the patterns you've developed to protect yourself and to cope with or avoid pain. Allowing feelings you have not been able to feel can bring greater freedom, choice and flexibility in your present life.
  • For many clients, using a mind-body approach called Brainspotting can be a powerful way to release pain, trauma and emotions trapped in the deep brain and body.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training and Qualifications.

BA (hons) Psychology - University of Sheffield
Cruse Certificate in Bereavement Counselling - Cruse Bereavement Care
Foundation Certificate in Existential Counselling - Regents College
Post Graduate Diploma in Humanistic Counselling - Brighton University
Brainspotting - Levels 1, 2, 3 & 4 - London and online.

I am also a Brainspotting consultant with BSPUK.

I welcome and feel privileged to work with clients who have a wide variety of reasons for seeking counselling, such as depression, anxiety, abuse, trauma, addictions, loss and bereavement. My theoretical perspective is Humanistic. This means I draw on ideas from Gestalt, TA and Person Centred Therapy, according to the individual needs of each client. I believe in everyone's capacity for growth and change and often incorporate brainspotting into my work, offering clients another level of depth, processing and integration.

I also often work with people who don't feel good enough, who feel stuck, trapped or lost or don't know who they are. Who have a strong inner critic, drive themselves to be perfect or please others, experience a lack of joy in their lives or believe they are fundamentally flawed. I love also working with creative sensitive souls who are in the process of finding their voice and exploring their creativity.

I have more than 10 years experience as a counsellor and am a registered member of the BACP (the main regulatory body for Counselling in the UK) and I am mindful of their ethical framework.

Whatever you are looking for from counselling, I would be happy to hear from you and see how we could work together.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Brainspotting is an innovative brain-body-based therapy that has developed out of EMDR. It works with the deep brain, emotions and experiences that become stuck in our body and prevent us from functioning and living our lives as we want to. It is very helpful for releasing and processing trauma. Whether complex developmental trauma occurring over time during childhood, single-event trauma that has happened later in life, or integrating anything we feel is holding us back. It unfolds very naturally and is held within the safety of the trusting therapeutic relationship, based on empathy and attunement.
