About me

Maybe right now you are thinking that choosing a counsellor is hard and there are various things running through your mind, let alone any of the difficulties that you are currently facing that led you to looking for someone to talk to in the first place. So many different terms are used, and a long list of areas people work with might also add to your confusion.

I want to start by asking: how are you? Are you feeling unhappy or have thoughts that are affecting your daily life? Do you feel like no one understands how you are feeling or that you have to hide these feelings from others? Are you feeling anxious or feel that you are struggling? Or do you have a child that you are worried about? Or are you a child/teenager yourself and not understanding your emotions or things happening in your life?

Whatever your emotions, feelings, or thoughts, I might be able to help. We can work together to look at these feelings to try to understand them better, so that in time they have less of an impact on your life. I mainly work as a Person Centred Counsellor, but also use creative arts if you wish to use them. How we work together will be different for each person, and will depend on what suits you. For many of us, finding the words can sometimes be difficult, or even seem impossible. Using creative arts in therapy can be an alternative way of expression and communication for some people.

Whichever way you prefer to explore, I believe that I am easy to talk to and am impartial. I’ve been described by others as open minded and non-judgemental, compassionate and caring, which I hope helps clients feel comfortable exploring their experiences with me.

I work with both adults and young people. I am happy to work long term and also in a specific time-limited way if preferred. If your child is under 16 and you would like them to see me, please contact me to discuss how this can be arranged and what is involved.

I work from a building in the centre of town. The rooms are comfortable and private with ample parking on the High Street. Please note that the offices are upstairs. If this is an issue there is a possibility of home visits.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

Introductory session (30 minutes) – Free
60 minute sessions – £50 – Adults / £40 – Young People (in education) / £60 – Couples

I offer an initial half hour introductory session that I do not charge for. I understand that meeting someone new can be difficult and you might not know what to expect especially if you have not had counselling before.

This introductory session is an ideal time for you to ask me any questions that you might have, see if you feel comfortable with the space we are in and with me, and also to go over how we can work together. Maybe think of it as a ‘getting to know you’ session.

After this my current session rate is £50 for a sixty minute session. Sessions will usually be on a weekly basis but this may be negotiated. I do occasionally offer reduced rates to counsellors in training, or those experiencing financial difficulties. Please ask for further details.

Further information

I also run workshops under the name Trap the Spark (trapthespark.co.uk) themed around well-being and learning to take time for ourselves. The workshops allow you to do something creative and fun with other people who want to enjoy the same thing and who also want to learn to take time for themselves.

These workshops are run a few times a month (more often if people want it!) and cover a whole range of topics from dealing with letting go of stress, taking time to breathe for yourself, learning to say ‘no’, and coping with loss. Each workshop will have a creative element to it where you go away with something to help you remember how to ‘trap the spark’ on your own. Some of them will be just for plain fun! Being creative has a whole host of benefits to how a person feels so it might be you just want to come along to one of the general workshops and learn something new, make a gift for someone, and even take part in a holiday baked goods swap. The list of ideas is endless.
