Are you feeling the weight of the stress, anxiety and overwhelm that you are carrying in life? You might be suppressing feelings that are finally becoming harder and harder to ignore. Perhaps you're frustrated, getting stuck in the same spiralling thought patterns, knowing that you're not living the life that you want to, but not sure how to change things.
Selecting the right counsellor can be hard. Scanning the websites and profiles to find someone who might understand what you're faced with and who will listen, while you attempt to say out loud what's been going around in your head for so long.
You've done the hardest part of accepting you need help, and I hope that is where I can come in to offer you some much needed support. Through our work together, I’ll offer you a safe space where you can explore what’s really going on for you.
Whether you've had therapy before or this is your first time, my approach offers you a supportive space where together we can explore how your past has shaped your present and create clarity in how you might want to change your future.
With 25 years of coaching experience, my approach uniquely blends different forms of counselling* with solution focused coaching. My approach is focused on your individual needs because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all when it comes to counselling.
*the jargon bit(!) - my core approach within counselling is humanistic integrative using the theories Person Centred, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt
I specialise in helping clients to:
- Develop healthy coping mechanisms.
- Improve relationships.
- Build self-esteem and confidence.
- Gain clarity on personal values to understand what's truly important.
I am always open to working with whatever you bring to counselling. To date, my experience particularly includes:
- Stress, overwhelm, anxiety, burnout, depression and family issues.
- Work-life balance, low self-esteem, low mood, low confidence and life and career changes.
- LGBTQ+ open relationships and alternative relationship dynamics.
Could I be the right counsellor for you?
I grew up in Northern Ireland and my lived experience is what inspired me to help others. Growing up there wasn’t always easy and I had a turbulent childhood, living in an environment centred around alcoholism and domestic abuse. I began to realise that I was ‘different’ at around the age of 11 and that difference turned out to be that I was gay.
My journey from adolescence into adulthood had many ups and downs; I was bullied at school for being gay and experienced homophobia from within my family. In a short space of time, my first partner took his own life, my younger brother was taken into the care system and my mother died.
I have sought out my own therapy at various stages of my life, whether to understand my sexuality or to help with my grief, trauma, internal anger, worries and frustrations. Or simply to have my own space where I could freely express my feelings.
After moving to Bournemouth, I went on to build a successful career in learning and development and coaching for 25 years. When the Pandemic happened, it offered me the opportunity to train as a therapist, allowing me the privilege of helping people at a deeper level.
I have supported adult clients with a wide range of different needs, challenges and struggles, through my work within counselling agencies and in my private practice. I identify as a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community (my pronouns are he/him/his), and I am GSRD affirming. I am inclusive and work with people of all cultures and backgrounds.
Like all of us, I've had my own struggles and blocks to work through - trauma, bereavement, negative habits, unhealthy coping mechanisms - and so I know first-hand how important it is to both get to a better place and have someone you can trust to help you on the way.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my two dogs and when I'm relaxing, I can usually be found in front of the TV watching Coronation Street, Strictly or something equally as highbrow.
