MBACP (Accred)

About me

I am an Irish non-binary trans MBACP (Accred) integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, with many years of experience working in an NHS Clinical Psychology Department and private practice.

In private practice, I welcome anyone who feels that psychotherapy may be of help, whether you are looking to have just a few sessions to think about a specific issue or situation, or would like to consider longer-term therapy. Depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, illness, bereavement, self-esteem, gender and sexuality, queer identity, life-changes, are just some of the reasons why you may want to try psychotherapy.

My approach to psychotherapy is integrative - this means I work creatively and I have different perspectives and theories to draw on when working with you. I can adapt my approach to suit your changing needs. The main therapeutic modalities I draw upon are psychodynamic psychotherapy, acceptance commitment therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy and schema therapy.

I believe you are the expert of your life - you hold the resources to navigate life’s terrain and you may just need some help and guidance to connect to them. I will listen carefully to what you have to say and help you communicate the things you can’t put into words. We will work together to discover some of the root causes of your problems and the strategies to help you live a more fulfilling life.

Making the decision to seek counselling or psychotherapy is often not an easy one. It's important that you work with a therapist that is right for you; someone you can feel comfortable with.

If you would like to know more about how I work or just have a chat to see if I can help, send me an email to schedule your free 20 minute phone consultation.

Training, qualifications & experience

I gained a postgraduate degree in counselling and psychotherapy at The University of Edinburgh and further degrees in online therapy, psychology, theology and classical civilisation from Trinity College Dublin and Birmingham City University.

I am a highly experienced MBACP (Accred) integrative counsellor and psychotherapist having worked with a wide variety of client groups within private, public and third sectors. As a Primary Care Counsellor and Psychotherapist working in NHS Forth Valley Adult Clinical Psychology Department, I provide individual, couples and family therapy across Forth Valley with particular expertise in working with bereavement, trauma, long term conditions and LGBT+ issues. Prior to my role at NHS Forth Valley, I worked as the Lead Self Management Specialist in Dumfries and Galloway LGBT Plus where I developed and led an award-winning start up support programme offering advocacy, counselling, group therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy and befriending to LGBT+ adults.

I have an excellent understanding of governance issues as a Board Director of TalkAid, Got1Give1 and as a member of the Scottish Parliament Cross-Party Group on LGBTI Issues. As a registered ACTO online therapist, I also worked as a regional counsellor and psychotherapist for the Royal National Institute of Blind People providing online and telephone counselling to individuals and groups affected by sight loss.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
