Change Birmingham Brief Therapy
Change is a counselling charity that provides free counselling to individuals aged 14+ who are registered with a Birmingham GP. We ask for voluntary donations for anyone not matching these criteria.
Our therapy is brief and can average between 2-6 sessions to avoid dependency and to encourage client empowerment.
We also train counsellors, professional health workers, social workers and teachers in Solution Focused Practice.
Our courses consist of 3 levels of learning:
Foundation level - 2-day course approved by the BPS
Certificate level 3 - 4 units covering theories, the underpinning philosophy of SF, the differences between the SF approach and other approaches, working with young people and ethical issues and guidelines.
Diploma level 5 - 5 units that aim to provide a thorough background in theory into practice. Change Birmingham Brief Therapy will provide placement support and opportunities to learners.
Training, qualifications & experience
All counsellors and trainers are trained through our learning pathway ranging from Foundation to Diploma level in Solution Focused Practice. This training programme can often take up to 2 years.
They are expected to undertake a 6-9 month induction process under observation and guidance from Change mentors who are all highly experienced counsellors.
Change could not function without their dedication, passion and enthusiasm, and so we focus on offering them regular training and support via monthly group supervision with trained SFT supervisors.
Member organisations *
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
