About me

Have you lost some of your zest for life? Do you feel weighed down by the daily stress of just coping? Do you wonder how you got to where you are and feel unsure about how to move on? Is it difficult to talk to family and friends about how you feel? If you choose to work with me, together we can unravel and work through the experiences that have led you to "here"; work out where you'd like to get to; increase your awareness of your own needs, and then begin to make some small, but powerful changes.

After working with me people say they feel calmer, stronger, more resilient and more hopeful. "Cat helped me reframe my negative thoughts and build on my strengths". "Genuinely useful" I feel so much more alive now" " I now see things much clearer & I feel happier with myself" "I feel so much lighter & I've regained some control over my life" "Cat is easy to talk to".

I know just how daunting asking for some help can be. It's a brave step to take and can make you feel uncomfortable, but I'll do all I can to help you feel at ease. . When all the parts of you begin to work together harmoniously life suddenly become much easier. Give me a call or an email and let's start working on a way forwards to a more satisfying future.

I work with individuals, couples and children from age 5. I am also currently offering student supervisees a reduced rate.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualification as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor is with the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy; and I am registered with the BACP and the UKCP and I abide by their ethical frameworks.

My work is grounded in a relational, person-centred approach. I focus very much on developing a warm, non judgemental relationship while also utilising the analytical aspects of Transactional Analysis and the Psychodynamic Approach. Where appropriate, I find it can be helpful and illuminating to incorporate a variety of creative media.

I am also a fully qualified child and adolescent therapist.

I have a breadth of experience of working therapeutically with adults, children and young people who came to counselling for many different reasons: severe and mild depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, childhood or adulthood trauma or abuse, bereavement, social phobia, coping with anger, relationship issues, self-harming behaviours; clients who have faced homelessness, struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, struggled with attachment, have felt suicidal, are experiencing sexual difficulties, post traumatic stress disorder, and with young offenders.

I have recently completed a Certificate in Supervision with the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy and am offering a reduced rate of £40 while I build up my hours and experience.

I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Education, from my previous career, working with vulnerable young people and adults often with mental health issues.

As a counsellor and play therapist I have worked in primary and secondary schools across the region, as well as for Sunderland Counselling Services, Your Homes Newcastle and the Youth Offending Service.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Further information

Our well-being is affected by many factors; sometimes there is clear cause for our discomfort, but sometimes the story begins in the distant past.  Until now we have coped but a recent event has just tipped us over the edge and everything just feels overwhelming.

In addition to external events, everyone’s life story creates a unique way of thinking about the world which can often feel very lonely or confusing.

I do believe that we all have within us a perfect intuition designed to guide us on our best path through life.  Imperfect external circumstances often prevent us from hearing it, or we hear it but don’t recognise or act on it.  Initially there would have been good reasons for this; however, once we’re off the path, it’s much harder to find the way back.  We can start going around in circles and feel a bit lost.

If you decide to work with me I will walk gently, attentively and respectfully at your side as you begin to retrace your steps and find your own way again.   As your journey progresses, in the company of a non-judgemental other, your self-awareness will gradually heighten.  The emotional healing process which comes with looking at things in this safe, confidential and supportive space frequently brings a sense of relief and frees you up to live more autonomously and joyously in the present.
