Experience

My experience has taken place in a variety of settings, these include charities,  school,  colleges, companies and private practice.

I started out working with very young children in primary schools alongside supporting parents in inner city London. I have extensive experience in Secondary school counselling, working with teenagers between the ages of 13-19. Most of the work was one on one counselling, but there was some parent/child mediation sessions, individual parent support and family support sessions. My knowledge in the child protection arena is extensive.  I also provided training for teachers and supervised other therapists and mentors in the school.

My charity work has involved working mainly with adults in a one on one setting, this work ranged from free counselling which was open ended to low cost counselling which was a maximum of 24 sessions per client.  Presenting issues here included working with eating disorders, depression and generalised anxiety.

In my recent private practice I have worked with children as young as six, engaging with them using Play therapy to address underlying causes of their distress.  I also work with adolescents and young people, providing support around school bullying issues, anxiety and depression.  Current work with adults involves supporting staff within a company on a weekly basis who present with a variety of issues as well as providing group wellbeing sessions on a weekly basis. My EAP work involves supporting adults in the workplace based on a short term 6-8 session model.  The trauma therapy I provide is predominantly centred around working with Emergency Service personnel through a foundation, providing short term trauma therapy, however, I also provide  trauma therapy for more general trauma presentations in adults.

I am a qualified and accredited EMDR  Practitioner and work with young adults and adults that present with PTSD and CPTSD.  Scientific research has established EMDR as effective for post traumatic stress disorders.  It has also been successfully applied in treatment of chronic pain, phobias, panic and a variety of anxiety disorders including performance anxiety, complicated grief, sexual and/or physical abuse and disturbing memories.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Short term counselling

No matter how long we engage in the counselling process, the most important thing is that we are being listened to effectively by a counsellor who displays warmth, empathy, non-judgement and who regards us positively.

Short term counselling is useful for specific issues that need some resolution and usually last for 6 -12 sessions, examples include:  panic attacks, general anxiety, confidence issues, and other more specific issues that can be addressed in a more solution focused way.  Examples of approaches I use to help clients are: CBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy and EMDR therapy.

Trauma and PTSD

I am able to offer EMDR therapy to treat trauma. EMDR is a very effective approach to treating trauma through using eye movements  and other forms of bifocal stimulation to help the client access and reprocess difficult memories which often drive low mood and anxiety.  Examples of traumatic issues I have worked with include, school bullying, sexual trauma (assault ), bereavement trauma; historic abuse, phobias and road traffic accidents

Long Term Therapy

Long Term therapy is useful for more complex issues, like depression, abuse and eating disorders, as often the emotions associated with these behaviours stem from deep seated difficulties in our past.  A longer exploration time is needed therefore to unravel the causes of these feelings and behaviours.  Examples of approaches needed for deeper exploration are Person Centred Therapy, Psychodynamic approach, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and EMDR therapy.
