About me

Hello there.  Are you struggling with feelings that are overwhelming?  Or struggling to feel anything at all?  I can offer you a caring and supportive space to work this through.  I'm an experienced Integrative Counsellor so can draw on a range of counselling approaches and strategies to meet your unique, individual needs. However, my main concern will always be to build a positive and equal therapeutic relationship between us where you can feel accepted and respected, heard and understood.  Whatever brings you to counselling, I hope that together we can make sense of your experiences and enable you to move forwards in a purposeful and positive way. I will always be interested to hear your ideas about what feels right and what may be most helpful during the counselling process. I will not tell you what to do nor give you ‘all the answers’, but I will offer a facilitative space where you can find these for yourself.

I will endeavour to help you feel comfortable and engaged throughout the counselling process and am committed to providing you with the best possible service.  I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling (Registration no. 373270).  Thus I uphold the professional standards of the BACP and adhere to its Ethical Framework of Good Practice. Having been on the receiving end of therapeutic support myself, I understand both the challenges and great rewards of the experience.

In addition to the more traditional model of ongoing counselling work I also offer ‘One-off Therapy’.  This involves an extended single session of counselling and a follow up appointment a few weeks after.  This may work well for you if you don't have the time or money to commit to a lengthy course of therapy.  This type of approach may be suitable if you would like to work on a specific, current problem or you would like support in making an important decision.  It is not suitable for addressing historical issues and/or deep rooted trauma.  If you would like to know more about this, please contact me and I can send you further information.

I have worked as a Counsellor at Sheffield Mind and also the University of Sheffield Counselling Service supporting clients across a wide range of issues including: depression, anxiety, panic attacks, bereavement, relationship break-up, sexual identity, work stress, bullying, anger, domestic abuse, parenting issues, childhood neglect and abuse, the impact of chronic trauma, self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, sexual assault, psychosis, personality disorders. I worked for several years as a Specialist Mental Health Mentor at the University of Sheffield.  This involved offering caring and empathic support to students experiencing a range of mental health difficulties as well as students who had diagnoses of A.D.H.D and Asperger's.  In addition to my counselling work I have also taught Counselling Theory and Skills at S.P.A.C.E: The Academy (Sheffield Psychotherapy and Counselling Education).

I have worked as a Volunteer Support Worker at a local domestic abuse project and also spent several years offering on-line emotional support to women who had experienced miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss.  Prior to becoming a Counsellor I worked for many years as a Senior Research Fellow at both of the Universities in Sheffield.  Much of this work focused on supporting vulnerable people with complex mental health issues, to make positive changes in their lives and also to identify the underlying causes of vulnerability.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
