Do you regularly struggle with stress, anxiety, and overwhelm? There may be an underlying issue from your past that's causing it. Want to know what it is? It's trauma, and it's impacting you more than you may realise. Trauma is the response to very stressful, frightening or distressing events that overwhelm a person's ability to cope. It causes feelings of helplessness, loss of control, confusion, shame, guilt, hopelessness and diminishes your sense of self and your ability to feel a full range of emotions and experiences. You may experience trauma as feeling anxious, angry, reactive and hyper-vigilant, and you may overthink, overwork and strive for perfection. Or you may experience trauma as feeling burnt out, exhausted, withdrawn and shut down, and you may procrastinate and people please. Either way your nervous system is dysregulated through trauma.
The truth is that most of us have unresolved trauma due to early life stress, painful loss, and most recently, pandemic-related challenges. The bigger your traumas are and the longer you leave them unresolved, the more likely you are to experience stress, anxiety, and overwhelm in your daily life and relationships.
And exposure to trauma, whether physical, mental, or emotional, can have long-term, detrimental effects on your health and well-being that are holding you back from living your life fully. For example, people with trauma are twice as likely to have an autoimmune disease, four times more likely to develop mental health disorders, and trauma is the number one cause of all addictions.
In your 1:1 sessions I will support you to :
- understand your physiology and why you feel the way you do
- learn body practices to repair, calm and regulate your nervous system
- effectively reduce and calm anxiety symptoms
- feel more empowered and harness your own internal resources
- gain insight to new perspectives and problem solving
- enjoy greater awareness, understanding, acceptance and self-compassion
A healthy nervous system is not always calm. In our life we will experience some stress, challenges, adversity, and failure. A healthy nervous system that is given the opportunity to fully recover from stress activation becomes adaptable, resilient and flexible. Regulation means you learn to coax your nervous system back to a healthier state that allows you to cope better with life. You have more options; you can see different perspectives and you have greater agency in shaping your life. Sometimes you just need the right tools to help you to return to a state where you can think clearly and feel at ease. When you regularly use practices that re-tune your nervous system it becomes more flexible and resilient.
Would you like to feel calm, confident and take back greater control of your life? My 1:1 therapy offers you a safe, confidential place to talk about your life, your thoughts and feelings, and anything that may be confusing, painful or uncomfortable. As a trained professional, I will help you to understand what motivates your responses and behaviours. And I can help you to understand, normalise and address these common human problems to show you that you are not alone and that you can be supported to recover from trauma. I will assist you to find your own solutions to problems in a perceptive and insightful way. This will help you to find your sense of self, let go of old unhelpful patterns and make positive changes by thinking or acting differently, strengthening your relationships, improving your confidence and self-esteem and feeling equipped to take greater control of your life.
