Caroline Hodgson BA, MSW, Dip.Therapeutic Counselling(CPCAB),MNCS (Prof Acc)
I am a very experienced professional counsellor, with 21 years post-qualifying experience of counselling adults and young adults. The core values of my approach to counselling come from a deep respect for the uniqueness of our experiences, qualities, challenges and needs both as individuals and in our relationships with others.
'You are not just a drop in the ocean. You are the mighty ocean in the drop'
(Rumi- 13th Century)
I offer a warm, non-judgemental, non-directive counselling relationship, where personal and/or professional issues can be safely explored and addressed. These may range from a specific difficulty to dissatisfaction with life, or a loss of meaning, direction and/or purpose.
Counselling can also help us to make decisions, to explore choices and options, develop coping strategies, and guide us from feeling victims of circumstances to feeling we have more control over our lives.
Life can be very challenging and demanding at times, and you may be feeling very overwhelmed and/or confused. Periods of suffering from depression, anxiety, stress and/or relationship difficulties for example, can be experienced by any of us at some time in our lives. Adjusting to and coping with experiences of loss and change can be particularly challenging and stressfull.
At times the counselling process can feel painful, as we may become more aware of for example our self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviours. Yet this self -awareness can also help to empower us more.
' If we understand that our ideas are ideas we have created, then we know we're free to change them'
Dorothy Rowe in 'Beyond Fear'
I appreciate that finding a counsellor who feels right for you is very important. For this reason, many people choose to come to see me via personal or professional recommendation. It may be that you have never experienced counselling before, or have mixed feelings about counselling. The initial counselling appointment is also an opportunity for us both to decide if I am the best person to meet your needs.
My hope is that you will experience counselling as a supportive and empowering process, enabling you to find ways forward through discovering and developing your own 'inner' emotional, intuitive and psychological resources, and by exploring and identifying specific 'outer' external resources which may also assist and support you, depending on your current needs/interests.
' Accept Self. Shoot forth the arrow of Self acceptance. It is an arrow of tremendous energy and guiding wisdom'
Blackwolf Jones (Contemporary Native American writer)
