We are an experienced partnership of 24 years. As well as offering counselling for individuals we offer you a uniquely supportive way of working for couples where you will have the benefit of two practitioners attending to your relationship.
What we do
In the course of our lives we periodically experience events that cause us pain and difficulty. Friends and family can be a great source of support though inevitably they will have their own particular perspectives, self interests and limitations. Sometimes we feel unwilling to involve people we know and consequently can feel very alone with our problems.
At such key points it can be useful to get professional, unbiased support... to help you deal with the difficulty and help you identify strengths you never knew you had! Most people discover that they emerge from their crisis stronger and more resourceful.
At Cannongate Counselling we can help you with a wide range of life issues such as:
- Anger management in self and others
- Loss & bereavement
- Relationship difficulties
- Mid-life issues
- Dealing with stress
- Low self-esteem
- Assertiveness without aggression
- Abuse issues
- Loss of identity
- Family issues
- Gender identity
- Career/occupational development
- Life coaching
Our work with you will always be respectful, confidential, caring as well as challenging where appropriate. We believe that with professional help our experiences as human beings, especially crises, provide the opportunity to grow stronger. We will help you to understand the meaning of your thoughts and feelings, and to develop your capacity to become resilient and resourceful.
We specialise in couple work and offer you the following unique options:
* your choice to work with one of us, either a male or a female practitioner
* your choice to work with us both together. This is usually a faster route since you will have the benefit of two specialists and gain the added value of a male and a female perspective.
* you may choose to see both of us together for the first session and then to choose either to continue with us or go with one of us of your choosing.
We will be guided by what you want informed by our training and experience.
What you can expect from relationship counselling:
- Resolve conflict
- Learn new ways to communicate
- Develop insight into the cause of the difficulty and understand each other
- Express your feelings in a safe setting
- Re-establish your couple-life independent of family and life pressures
- Re-energise your relationship
- Find new directions and deeper levels of intimacy
