Brenda Barrass - Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist / EMDR Therapist
I am an independent accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist working from my comfortable clinic in Harefield near Uxbridge and Rickmansworth and within easy reach of South Bucks, Herts and M40 / M25. I offer a caring, professional service to adults and 16-18 year old's who are either funding themselves or by referral from insurance companies or occupational health providers.
I have been working in the field of mental health and emotional well being for 20 years in the NHS, voluntary sector and more recently in private practice. I provide therapy for individuals and couples with a range of psychological / emotional problems and physical conditions including: depression, anxiety, OCD, phobias, post-traumatic stress, insomnia childhood trauma, social anxiety, body image concerns (BDD), health anxiety, low self esteem, bullying, relationship problems, alcohol and drug misuse, chronic pain and coping with long term physical health conditions. I prefer to treat everyone as an individual and to work out with you what your concerns are and what you would like to be different.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a clinically proven and NICE approved therapy to help overcome unhelpful, habitual ways of thinking and behaving which can keep problems going - we would work together to find out what you would like to change and find more helpful ways to respond to your areas of difficulty. CBT is most effective when you try out different ways of responding to your thoughts and emotions in between the sessions. CBT will help you develop new skills and strategies that you can continue to use after your therapy is completed. I use a range of interventions under the CBT umbrella of treatments and incorporate Mindfulness based approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy alongside standard CBT.
I also offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) - this is an evidenced-based treatment recommended for PTSD and has also been increasingly used to treat distressing events which can often maintain many other problems e.g. depression and many anxiety based problems.
Training, qualifications & experience
BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist
EMDR Therapist - Member of EMDR Association of UK and Ireland.
I trained as a counsellor and worked in the voluntary sector in the 1990's and then qualified as a Mental Health Nurse in 1999 and have worked in a variety of NHS settings providing psychological treatment and supervision to groups and individuals.
I specialised in CBT and gained my post-graduate diploma in CBT from The University of London in 2007. I have worked as a full time CBT therapist since qualifying, both in the NHS and in private practice and now work solely in private practice. My background in Mental Health has given me a broad range of experience of working with many people with different levels of psychological and emotional problems which underpins my understanding when working as a psychotherapist.
I completed the EMDR training in London in 2013 and am able to offer this treatment to individuals with PTSD and other distressing experiences.
