About me

I am straightforward, kind and sensitive with experience of supporting people with a wide range of issues. Words others have used to describe the way I work include “sensitive, thoughtful, resourceful, committed and empathic”.

I draw on a range of tried and tested approaches based in current researched evidence, which can be tailored to suit your needs. You remain in control of your counselling at all times, you decide what you do and don't want to work on, and I bring a range of knowledge and skills to help you explore and understand what troubles you and decide what you would like to do next as you work towards improved well-being and effective, positive change if that is what you want. My work is continuously monitored by trained supervisors to ensure that I am providing you with the best therapy I can, and that my work meets the exacting standards and ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Finding a therapist who feels right for you is essential, so always offer an initial conversation via on the phone or over Zoom so that you can get a feel for what it might be like to talk to me and get any questions you may have answered.  It also gives me an opportunity to check I can provide what you are looking for.

I know it can be hard to take the step of making contact with a therapist but  if you decide to do so you will be met with gentleness, calmness and compassion.  I always respond.

A little about me

I first became involved with counselling as a psychologist in the 1980’s when I set up and ran a large counselling service. Over the years I have supported people from all walks of life with a wide range of physical, emotional and mental health issues and continued to study, augmenting my qualifications with Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have experience of working with a wide range of issues including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, low self-esteem and relationship difficulties to name just a few. For several years I volunteered with CRUSE gaining more experience of working with grief and loss. I have been a family carer for over 25 years and have supported other carers

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, integrating a range of tried and tested approaches based in current researched evidence, including person-centred therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and attachment theory. I combine these with approaches learned since my initial training from other therapies, to best respond to your needs. I work collaboratively, which means we work together, you decide what you do and don't want to work on, and bring expertise on yourself and those things you are struggling with and I bring a range of knowledge and skills to help you explore and understand what troubles you, decide what you would like to do about these and work towards effective, positive change if thats what you want. My work is continuously monitored by trained supervisors to ensure that I am providing you with the best therapy I can and that my work meets the exacting standards and ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I work with adults (over 18 years old) but bring training, knowledge and experience of development across our life spans to help us.

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Find Out More

If you would like to find out more about therapy with me, please feel free to contact me, email is usually best, and I will always respond. I usually begin with a conversation where you can find out what it feels like to talk to me, get answers to any questions you may have, and I can check that I can provide what you are looking for. This may help you to decide  whether therapy is for you and to understand what you can expect from working therapeutically with me. I don't charge for this and there is no pressure to go any further if you don't want to. If it becomes apparent that working with me isn’t right for you, I will be happy to suggest alternatives.
