About me

Hi my name is Barry 'The Tattooed Counsellor'.

Much like yourselves, I found myself looking for a counsellor a number of years ago when I experienced a marital breakdown and the experience of going through the family courts, it changed my life.

I had the fortune to be able to train to become a counsellor and so began a journey into a world in which at first I struggled to fit in with and feel accepted.

Coming from a council estate upbringing and background, my values and morals felt very out of place to those I trained with.  However, this was also a part of my own personal journey allowing me to recognise that who I was, was good enough.

It allowed me to realise that my ability to be honest, open and genuine with others no matter who they were was the one thing that they all respected (they may not have always agreed with this, or at times even liked it) but at least they respected the honesty.

This is what I offer to you:  A space in which you can explore what ever may be going on for you right now.  In a safe confidential environment, knowing you will be accepted for who you are.

I believe that our past is with us here in the present, still influencing the ways in which we interact with others based upon our history's.

I also believe for many that our perceived fears of the future, based on our historical experiences, often holds us back from change (we stay in our comfort zone since we feel safe here even if its causing us unrest).

I therefore utilise an integrative approach of:

Psychodynamic Theory (a way of exploring our pasts).

Person-Centred Theory (the therapeutic relationship we form and one in which I see what others see).

I also utilise Acceptance and Commitment Theory and a Solution Focused Approach (since once we become aware of what may be holding us back or causing us psychological unrest we need to explore how we can resolve this).
