Anne Murphy BACP Accredited Counsellor (MBACP Accred), EMDR therapist
Sometimes life can feel very overwhelming and difficult to deal with on your own. My aim is to work together with you to discover why you feel the way you do and to support you in exploring choices.
I believe that often a difficult time in our lives can bring with it the possibility for growth and development, it can be a chance to become more who we truly are. I will work with you in a caring, confidential and non-judgmental way to look at the issues that bring you to counselling.
I trained as an integrative person-centred counsellor. Person-centred means that I will not seek to direct our work together but to support you in exploring the things that you want to talk about; and it also means that I believe everyone has the ability to grow and develop as a person. Integrative means I can also offer you ways in which we could use aspects of other theories from within the humanistic way of working, if it seems they might be beneficial for your aims for growth. As a counsellor I will work with whatever issue you wish to bring, however you may be interested to learn that some of my specific areas of interest and experience are as follows:
Survivors of abuse in childhood. Abuse can take many different forms and the effects on the individual can be different for each person. However many people experience some if not most of the following: guilt, shame, low self esteem, anxiety and isolation. There will very likely be physical health issues that go alongside these emotions. Childhood trauma and its established effects are NOT your fault, even if you were made to feel otherwise. Recovery IS possible, we know the abuse happened but we also know that it is not happening now. However it can feel as if it is.
I will work sensitively and compassionately with you to explore your feelings and to build you recovery. In doing this we do not need to revisit all the details of what happened to you, unless you choose to, it is often much more about how it is making you feel now.
Bereavement. I believe that bereavement is a very individual process and it can be very valuable to have time and space to explore this. I aim to provide a supportive place for you to do this. Although I may sometimes share information if it seems useful, I will never tell you how you should be grieving. Sometimes it can just help to talk to someone who is not directly involved.
Disordered eating patterns. A way of working that I find very helpful is for us to explore together the roots of your disordered eating patterns - which may often have involved a need for control in one area of life when others have been out of control. Alongside this we can explore changes that you wish to make in those patterns. In this exploration I would support you to always come from a place of compassion towards yourself rather than self criticism. If this approach interests you, do get in touch.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing). I am a qualified EMDR therapist. This is a treatment approved by both NICE and the World Health Organisation. It is a way of processing traumatic or disturbing memories using rapid eye movements (similar to those we experience in deep sleep). In trauma an experience may not be processed by the brain so that it can feel like it is happening now. Using EMDR the memory is not lost but is processed so that the current distress is reduced. It is not a form of hypnotism. You are conscious and in control at all times. You are not required to go into detail about what happened in order to process the memory. More information is available on the website of the EMDR UK & Ireland association of which I am a member, see link below:
I understand that making that first step to contact a counsellor can be difficult, and I think it is very important that you feel at ease and comfortable with the person you choose to work with. With this in mind you may wish to arrange a one-off appointment initially, for a reduced fee of £30. This gives you the chance to see how you feel about counselling and to decide whether you would like us to work together.
If you have any questions please do ring or email me for a chat.
My private practice is based in the centre of Derby.
Thank you for reading my page, and whatever you decide to do I wish you well. Anne
