About me

Are you experiencing some difficulties in your day-to-day life which are making you feel sad?  Stress, anxiety and relationship issues can all lead to feelings of depression and low self-esteem, making life difficult in the busy world we live in today. These feelings can be overwhelming at times leaving us confused as to the best way of coping with daily situations.  You may feel you need some help to get through this difficult time and this is where therapy might help.  I work in the here-and-now focusing on what is happening for you currently in your life and what you might want to change.

I am a humanistic Europe Accredited EMDR Practitioner offering therapy in a safe, confidential place for self-exploration of personal problems, emotional or relationship difficulties.  It is my belief that people potentially have all the necessary abilities to solve their problems or face their difficulties.  However, sometimes people get stuck and need some assistance and that is where I may be able to help you.  I integrate EMDR therapy whenever it may be useful.  EMDR looks at past or recent traumas that have happened in someone's life with the aim of reprocessing the memories so that they no longer trigger you in daily life. Traumas range from big ones to small ones, whatever feels traumatic to you.

You may initially have one particular issue you want to work on. However, this may change as you progress and you may find other issues you would like to explore. You may prefer talk therapy to EMDR.  I will help you to explore your thoughts and feelings, your hopes and fears to help you to develop greater personal awareness.

Working in the here-and-now we will focus on what is happening for you currently in your life and looking at things you might want to change about your situation.  It is not always necessary to look into your past but it may be useful to link current feelings and things that trigger you to past experiences and original relationships in your life.

Without offering solutions I will offer my comments and be open to exploring your issues with you with the aim of helping you to become aware of your own experience.

I offer weekly 50-minute sessions which are face-to-face in my counselling room, either in Godalming or Guildford. This work can be long-term, short-term or time-limited for young people 18 years and over and adults of all ages.  I am also available to work with counselling students who are required to be in counselling as part of their studies.  EMDR therapy usually takes longer than 50 minutes and can be up to one-and-a-half hours.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I also have experience of working with young adults and worked for six years in the counselling department of a London University.

I am an EMDR trained therapist in trauma-focused work.    These sessions are very different from talking therapy, where eye movements are used to enhance the processing of memories that have been disfunctionally stored in the brain. Sessions are often longer than 50 minutes and can be up to one and a half hours long.  I try to keep to as near an hour as possible.  However, less sessions may be needed depending on the amount of trauma and, therefore, the length of time to complete the work.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

I have wheelchair accessibility in GU4 only. In Godalming there is a staircase to the clinic.
