About me

It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves. William Shakespeare.

I provide a calm, safe and confidential space for you to talk about and think through any troubling feelings or emotions.

I am a caring, qualified and professional counsellor with a very down to earth attitude and experience of working successfully with many different issues.

My main office is inBalloo Industrial Estate, BANGOR, but I also can offer counselling in HOLYWOOD and ANTRIM (Monday appointments only).

What is stress?

"The word stress is usually used to describe the feelings that people experience when the demands made on them are greater than their ability to cope. At such times people can often feel overloaded, under tremendous pressure and very tense or emotional. Stress affects everyone, young and old and is a completely normal reaction that all human beings will experience from time to time when faced with situations that they feel under pressure in. Stress is becoming ever more common in our society and for some this stress can become overwhelming". Anxiety UK.

Learning coping mechanisms to dealing with stress and anxiety is often the key to overcoming it and this is what counselling can provide.

I promote the autonomy of my clients, giving them tools and mechanisms that will allow them to overcome their difficulties and create a better sense of wellbeing for themselves in the future.

Training, qualifications & experience

Including teaching adults with learning difficulties part time for 13 years, in both hospital and community settings, I have experience of working in the community with people of all ages and backgrounds for the past 20 years.

I began my counselling training in 1998 when I completed my first counselling course in my local community.

I hold a degree from Queens University on 'Psychology Trauma', a 'CPCAB' and a 'University of Ulster Counselling Certificate', and a 'CPCAB Diploma' in therapeutic Counselling plus a variety of specialised training, in a number of issues including

  • Child Protection
  • Stress Management
  • Play Therapy
  • Drug and Alcohol Misuse
  • Self Harm Awareness
  • Suicide Awareness
  • Living with HIV
  • Protecting Children And Vulnerable Adults

My counselling training was integrative and the predominant theory was 'Person Centred' but included other theories, mainly 'Psychodynamic' and 'Cognitive Behavioural Therapy' training.

"It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried."  -- Carl Rogers, Person Centred Theorist. From On Becoming a Person, 1961.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”
― Carl Rogers.

In my counselling experience, I have worked successfully on many issues with people of all ages and backgrounds.

I am passionate about working professionally and ethically, and have a comprehensive knowledge of a variety of specialist agencies who can help, where a client feels they may need additional help.

Member organisations

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

  • If you decide to come to counselling, there will be an initial assessment, which costs £35 and lasts approximately 40 minutes.
  • This will give us a chance to discuss any issues that you would like to explore and also it will give us time to decide if counselling is right for you.

Sometimes there may be other options open to you, and if I believe that counselling will be of no benefit to you, we will discuss this.

The frequency and amount of sessions required really depends on how complex the issues are and how long you have been living with them.  This will be discussed at the initial assessment.

My fee is £45 per session for one to one counselling.  £60 per session for couples counselling.
