Hello, my name is Anita Demetriou and I am a RELATE trained counsellor. I specialise in working with couples and individuals using a relationship focused approach.
How can couple counselling help you with your relationship?
Couples come to counselling for many reasons. It could be that you have just found out that your partner is having an affair, or you are having constant arguments, or that you have separated and want to see if you can give it another go. There are many different and varied reasons, but manly that for whatever reason your relationship is not working and you need help to move forward.
What can I achieve from couple counselling?
Counselling will enable you to achieve a better understanding of yourself and your partner. Understanding yourself and why you are affected by what they say and do, will in turn help you to deal with your reactions more effectively. Counselling will help you to talk about things that are sometimes difficult, for example, conversations around intimacy, sex, love, expectations, anxiety, fears, hopes and dreams. Through being more open and talking more you will be able to explore more about what you want or feel you need from your relationship and also understand your partner better. This will hopefully help you both to be more empathic, respectful and supportive with each other.
As an experienced couple counsellor, I have many years of working with couples from many different backgrounds, religions and personalities. I am warm, approachable and professional, but also non judgment and impartial.
Sessions are confidential in a safe environment.
In our first session we will talk about your relationship, what has bought you to counselling, establish what you each want from counselling and whether I will be the right person for you.
If you do want to proceed, then we will talk more about this and the process.
What can you expect from the sessions?
The sessions are ongoing and are not fixed. I will work with your agenda and tailor the sessions to your needs. I welcome feedback, work transparently and review regularly in order to check if we are going in the right direction. Some of the sessions will be with you both and some individually. Some couples welcome this and some don't, but coming on your own might give you the opportunity to talk things through, to focus on yourself and give you space.
Training, qualifications & experience
Why am I a counsellor and coach?
A friend of mine once said that I am "a natural." I assumed what he meant was that I am good with people and I agree with him that I am, but counselling requires more that just being good with people. It also requires training and my training started about 20 years ago.
What is my training?
My training started with Psychotherapy, which can be described as a way of working that uses psychological principles for the purpose of assisting people to modify their behaviours, cognitions, emotions and enable them to achieve their desired outcome.
My training continued to evolved by adding a Systemic approach. Humans do not live in isolation, we live as part of a system. Our families are a system and that system influences our behaviour, cognition and emotion. We come into this world with our personalists, but our environment has an impact on this. Our environment can either nurture or hinder our growth, can influence how we think and how we behave with ourselves and with others and how we form relationships.
Through my work with RELATE, I became involved in a project that involved working short term with women who were in abusive relationships. Prior to this project a great deal of my work had been long term, so working short term, I discovered that by using more of a coaching approach I could work more affectively.
The next step was training as a Coach. Adding coaching to my capabilities meant working more creatively to enabling change. I use a collaborative solution-focused approach. As a coach I work to facilitate change and growth. Coaching has given me are more tools, more skills and more ways to assist people to achieve more. I have also trained as a NLP practitioner, adding more tools and techniques with my practice.
So going back to what my friend said, yes I am "a natural" who also now has a great deal of knowledge, skills and expertise to enable clients to create a better future for themselves.
