Angelika Scheffler UKCP accredited Counsellor and Supervisor
I offer both short and long term counselling and coaching for adults, children and young people and families.
I also offer individual and group counselling supervision and clinical supervision. I am happy to undertake some travel to facilitate group supervision.
Sessions usually last for one hour and can be either face-to-face, by telephone or online such as VSee, Skype or facetime.
I know how challenging it can be to come and see someone so why not come and meet with me for an initial session to see if we could work together.
Counselling does not aim to 'fix the problem' in a simplistic way. It invites the client to know and understand themselves, to extend their experience, to intervene in stumbling blocks or hurtful and self limiting practices, to make choices and changes to live life more richly. Counselling allows space and time for the client to 'go back on themselves' and question their actions and motivations.
Working with the coaching model I support individuals in unlocking a their potential to maximize their own performance by helping them to learn rather than to teach. The following definition best describes my style of coaching; as "a collaborative, solution focused, result-orientated and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth of the coachee” (Grant 1999, basic definition also referred to by the Association for Coaching, 2005).
I believe in the importance of a trusting relationship between therapist and client. Trust results from a genuineness, empathy and acceptance shown by the therapist. It is from this therapeutic relationship that the client will gain the confidence to explore their difficulties whether past or present. I am curious about the influences of language, culture and contexts and I am passionate about encouraging engagement in the therapeutic relationship. Providing a safe and confidential setting for you to talk about the difficulties you may be experiencing.
As a supervisor I hold true to my relational principles. I believe that a supervisory relationship needs to be collaborative, build on mutual respect, genuineness, and trust enabling the supervisee to bring examples from their practice that they are proud of and that concerns them, and for the supervisor to bring openly their feedback.
Over the last 15 years, I have been able to build up extensive experience of working in the public sector, NHS, not-for-profit and voluntary sector, supporting people with a variety of vulnerabilities including mental health, addictions, trauma, relationship difficulties, domestic violence, abuse, and adjustment issues.
I am a German national having come to England in 1985 in my early 20’s as an ‘Army wife’. I fluently speak German and English and work in both languages.
Having had the opportunities to experience working with individuals, couples and families from many different backgrounds including clients where English is not the first language if necessary clients can be seen with a dialogue translator.
