In 17 years as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist, I've helped several hundred clients deal with personal distress such as Anxiety, Depression, Sexual abuse, Bereavement, Suicidal thoughts . . . and generally just feeling bad about yourself. I know how hard that first step is to e mail, make a first appointment and then talk about things that have been buried for years. Every person who contacts me receives by email a pdf, What can you expect from Counselling, which simply (with graphics!) describes how I work. It'll help you identify what you need from sessions - whether or not you choose to see me.
I have a lot of experience of working with trainees - some especially fruitful work is done when the focus of self is guiding your theoretical and practical growth.
Below is feedback from a sample that did take that step. Look at the gains they have made:
"Wow! What progress in 9 sessions!" - Client with Anxiety.
"The very best feeling I have in the world now is that I deserve to be loved unconditionally." - Client who suffered childhood sexual abuse.
"Much lighter, a weight lifted." - Bereavement client who had experienced several close losses, including a suicide.
''You gave me my life back!'' - Client who had no sense of self-worth, suffering Bulimia for over 20 years.
'‘For the first time in my life, I really like myself!'' - Client with a severe internal critic.
"I feel I was very lucky to receive therapy because it has made a huge difference to how I feel now." - Client with Depression.
"I am still using the techniques you taught me effectively." - Client with Anxiety.
"Best of all it has enabled me to come off the medication that had been managing my anxiety for the last couple of years as I now feel able to self-regulate." - Client with Anxiety and low self esteem.
"I no longer have suicidal thoughts. I can honestly say that if your sessions hadn’t been available at the beginning of my illness...I wouldn’t be here." - Client originally with suicidal intentions.
"Andrew helped me realise that as a child I wasn’t responsible for the abuse that I received, a thought that I had carried with me for many many years. Those thoughts had made me make unsuitable choices in my relationships and choices of men, but I now know that I don’t have to accept or seek second best." - Client who suffered childhood sexual abuse.
"Colleagues, friends and family have all remarked on the changes that they have seen in me." - Client with very low self-esteem.
"I didn't think that it would make any difference to the way I had felt about myself for the last fifty years however I have to say the transformation has been incredible for me both professionally and personally." - Client with very low self-esteem resulting from emotionally deprived, prematurely sexualised childhood.
''I've moved from a child-like position and maintain an adult position particularly when dealing with people I perceive as figures of authority.'' - Client who found confrontation very distressing.
‘’Revisiting and reconnecting with the young child that felt so abused, afraid and alone was probably the most crucial aspect of the work we did together. Identifying the thoughts and feelings she/I generated and understanding that the difficulties she/I presented were influencing not only the present, but my thoughts about the future was incredibly helpful.’’- Client who had a very abusive and neglected childhood.

I use therapeutic methods based on Memory Reconsolidation/Coherence Therapy - see Bruce Ecker on You Tube. This is an approach developed from research findings about the plasticity of our emotional learning fromthe early 21st Century. We can get better!
I charge £50 per full hour session, with negotiated reduction if you are unwaged, minimum wage, or part time worker.
After your first session, there will be no pressure to carry on with me.
Will you be able to work with me?
Here are a few comments from clients about how they have found sessions with me:
‘I appreciated the fact that you seemed to remember what had happened at previous sessions – reinforced that it was me we were talking about not just the 11:30 appointment.’
‘I saw a psychiatrist 20 years ago – this therapy was better for me.’
‘I’ve told things to you I’ve told no one . . . it was a secretive, embarrassing thing.’ [An eating disorder]
‘Initially I didn’t come about any of the stuff that we ended up dealing with.’
‘I found this counselling process with you was quite inspiring and would like to be a counsellor myself. What you did for me was amazing.’
'I am not sure if it is the therapy that helped me so much or the quality of the listener offering the therapy, personally, I think the latter. From my very first appointment, our very first meeting, I came away with something that proved helpful, oh so helpful to me and I am very grateful that you were there at a time when I needed you. You have had a huge impact on how I move forward and I recommend you to everyone I meet where I have mentioned my treatment. Thank you.'
