Andrew Bateson. BSc. MSc. P.G. Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy
Prior to training as a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor, I worked in Manufacturing Industry and then Teaching. I currently have a counselling contract with Focus Counselling Services, an IAPT service provider in Hull, working with people with common mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. I am in the process of completing the NHS IAPT Counselling for Depression training after which I will receive a qualification. I have experience working for Survivors, a charity in Hull for people who have suffered sexual abuse, and in Occupational Health in the NHS. My private practice is based in Leconfield and has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Being a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor means I can draw from different approaches to suit each client and to be able to offer the best therapeutic interventions for their presenting issues. I have extensive knowledge and experience in the workplace gained from working in industry and teaching. Being involved with the teaching union and dealing with disputes has enhanced this knowledge further, and at the age of 61 I have extensive life experience too. My vast experience contributes to my empathy and understanding with each client.
My areas of particular experience from all of my work, include, anxiety, depression, bereavement, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative identity disorder, sexual abuse and sexuality.

Research repeatedly shows that the most important factor in the success of counselling is the quality of the trusting, working relationship between the client and the counsellor rather than the specific therapies used. This requires that the client’s issues (which may involve looking at aspects of themselves and their emotions or their wider lives) are worked with in a supportive, empathic and non-judgmental way with the aim of reaching positive change.
All sessions are confidential unless there is a risk to life which becomes apparent in which case other services may need to be contacted.
