Julia Susewind, Clinical Psychologist

About me
We all have emotional health and stressful and transitional points in our lives can affect our wellbeing if we don’t look after ourselves and receive the right support.
I am a Clinical Psychologist specialising in supporting clients with common emotional health concerns and difficult circumstances, including:
- Anxiety and depression.
- Stress and burn-out.
- Loss and bereavement.
- Panic attacks.
- Relationship, self-esteem and confidence issues.
- Obsessive and compulsive behaviours.
- Phobias and fears.
- Trauma and family issues.
- Emotional impact of physical illness.
I have a flexible and integrative approach to my practice, combining psychodynamic therapy with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and systemic therapeutic methods, as appropriate to my clients’ needs. I put emphasis on a trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationship and work towards a shared understanding of my client’s problem. In my experience, this enables them to find their own solutions.
Alongside my private practice, I have an NHS role providing psychoeducation to groups and have previously held a position of Deputy Head of Clinical Psychology at a leading rehabilitation hospital in North-West Germany, providing CBT-based assessment and treatment to individual clients with a variety of presentations.
Having lived in the UK, Germany, France and India, I blend my experience and academic training with a heightened sensitivity to different cultural backgrounds.
I am registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) and am a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society (BPS).

What happens at the first session?
During the first assessment appointment I will work with you to develop understanding of the difficulties you face, including what might have made you vulnerable to developing difficulties, what triggered the difficulties, and what is keeping these difficulties going.
Collaborative decisions about treatment and what approach to use would then follow from what the formulation indicates. This agreed initial plan will guide treatment and can be further worked on and refined as part of the process of therapy.
