About me

Hi, my name is Amy, I’m a Relational Counsellor & Psychotherapist. I’m part of the team at Whitby Counselling & Psychotherapy, alongside working as a counsellor in a local Further Education establishment.
I draw on a wide range of theory to underpin my unique, creative and collaborative framework. I value my clients individuality, I view each person within the context of their environment, and use this to guide my practice. The relationship we co-create together is the biggest factor in your therapeutic journey.

I am a Feminist and I work from a trauma-informed,non-pathologising perspective. This means I understand the range of responses people have to trauma and how it impacts the brain and body. I believe that emotional distress arises from many factors; such as past experiences of trauma and adversity, discrimination, societal, cultural, political, and economic pressures.

I have worked as a counsellor and psychotherapist in a range of different settings, both statutory and voluntary, since 2011. Working as part of a team, and on my own, I have provided face to face, online and telephone, counselling and psychotherapy, both time limited and open ended, to various client groups. I have worked with children, adolescents and adults. I have also managed and set up new counselling services.

I believe that, given the right conditions, it is possible to heal, develop a sense of meaning and purpose, improve relationships with ourselves, others and the world, and begin living a more fulfilling and authentic life. Through offering warmth, acceptance and respect I aim to create a safe space where you can learn about yourself. I will endeavor to understand you, but will also challenge you to reflect and understand your own internal process, and help you gain deeper insight and awareness into yourself, and how you relate.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualifications include, a BACP Accredited, Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy from York St John University, and a level 4 Certificate in Counselling Children.

I have further specialist training in bereavement and loss undertaken through St Catherine's Hospice; The Application of Counselling Skills when Working with Bereavement & Loss.

I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I have taken part in many Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses and I am committed to undertaking a minimum of 40 hours CPD each year. A full list of all my CPD course can be see on request.

I currently work as a Senior Counsellor in a Further Education setting where I provide counselling for students and staff. In the past I have worked for a Women's Aid charity, providing counselling for women who have experienced domestic and/or sexual abuse, this includes childhood sexual abuse. I have been in private practice since 2014 and have also worked as a volunteer for a local Bereavement Support service. My past experience varies from working within a college setting providing counselling for students aged 16+, working in primary schools providing counselling for 5-11 year olds, and providing counselling for drug and alcohol dependants within a recovery service.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
