About me

I am an accredited psychosexual psychotherapist and supervisor with many years experience treating people who come to see me for help in resolving their sexual problems. Sometimes they have been living with these problems for years, or sometimes the problem has arisen suddenly, and they don't understand what could be the cause.  Sometimes a sexual relationship has become stale with one partner looking outside the relationship for sexual excitement, prompting a couple to look for help to improve their sex life.

Below are some of the sexual disorders I can help with:

  • General breakdown in a couple's relationship
  • Loss of desire
  • Painful intercourse (Dyspareunia and Vaginismus)
  • Difficulties with orgasm (Anorgasmia)
  • Difficulties with erections and ejaculation
  • Transgender concerns (Sexual orientation/gender identity issues)

Sexual difficulties can make people feel very alone. Some people feel so fearful, self-conscious and ashamed of their sexual problems that they suffer for months or even years, without discussing their worries with anyone, even their partner. Yet sexual difficulties are very common and can have many causes such as:

  • Physical (the effect of illness, accident, surgery, disability or medications)
  • Psychological (anxiety, depression or other mental health problems)
  • Emotional (unresolved grief or unhappiness within a relationship)
  • Childhood sexual abuse

How does it work?

Psychosexual therapy can help you to understand the root of the problem and then treat it to improve you sex life. Simply by talking to you as a couple, or on your own if you prefer, (however if you are in a relationship, it is ofter more beneficial if both of you attend), I will help you find out what could be causing your sexual problems.

For most of us talking about such a sensitive issue can be hard but I will always treat you sensitively and with respect.

About me

I first became interested in counselling in the 1980's when I lived in Singapore. I volunteered to work for the Samaritans of Singapore as a telephone counsellor, and on my return to this country continued my involvement with the Samaritans before training with Relate as a couple counsellor, going on to train as a psychosexual therapist. I worked for 12 years in a busy GP practice and during that time developed my private practice. I also spent some years working at the Priory Hospital Chelmsford taking referrals from consultant psychiatrists.

My therapeutic approach is behavioural, psychodynamic and integrative depending on the client's needs. I fit the therapy to the person. I offer short term or long term therapy and work from my home in the beautiful village of Kersey.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Although I specialise in psychosexual psychotherapy, I also see clients with other diverse and complex problems.  I have a particular interest in post-natal depression as this is a condition I suffered after the birth of both my children.  At the time, there was little understanding of my suffering, and I still believe it can be neglected by medical professionals, who might prescribe medication rather than counselling.

My fees are £60.00 per therapy appointment which reflects over 35 years experience and specialist training in psychosexual psychotherapy.

Further information

I work one day a week at North & East Mid-Essex Mind (the mental health charity) as a senior psychosexual psychotherapist in their psychosexual therapy clinic.

Confidentiality is maintained with the remit of the law. If a person is at risk of self harm or harming others I am obliged to share this information with the relevant authorities, set out in the COSRT's code of professional ethics. I also meet regularly with my supervisor where absolute confidentially is maintained.
