Amanda Barry - MBACP
In response to the pandemic, I have adapted my practice to online therapy. I remain resolutely committed to supporting my clients through this transition and believe there is opportunity for therapeutic growth as we face the challenges together. I will help you gain greater understanding of situations; discover how you may form a part of them and together we will explore new possibilities. I am caring and warm, with a passion for working with people.
Counselling may be the first time that you have been truly listened to, with acceptance and without judgement. I work with a Humanistic Gestalt perspective; this means that I believe that your unique experience as an individual is the most important thing in the therapeutic relationship.
The goal of counselling is to raise your awareness. The more awareness you have of the habitual patterns that trigger your behaviours, the greater the choice you will have in tackling challenging situations.
l work creatively and, as our sessions unfold, I may suggest using different materials, objects and enacting situations as a way of helping you actively explore the problem and raise your awareness. For more information please go to my website at https://www.amandabarrycounselling.co.uk .
I am an individual member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and belong to their Private Practice and Children and Young People sub-divisions. I am also an individual member of the HACP (Hampshire Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
I am committed to my own personal and professional development. As a member of the BACP, I abide by their Ethical Framework. This means that my clients receive a professional and confidential service by a competent and qualified counsellor; it also means my practise is fully insured and entails me having regular supervision and engaging in my own personal therapy. This enables me to be fully present for you as we journey together.
I am registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) and am GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) compliant. This means I protect your confidentiality and privacy. I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate.
Training, qualifications & experience
I hold a Diploma of Higher Education in Humanistic Gestalt Counselling with distinction (Bucks New University).
I retired from Hampshire Police after nearly 3 decades in a variety of specialisms, including domestic violence, child protection, and the management of fellow police officers impacted by traumatic experiences.
I attend professional conferences, workshops and have trained with the Pacific Gestalt Institute, California and am currently training at the Gestalt Centre Wales, doing a post graduate diploma in Children and Young Persons Psychotherapy (working towards UKCP accreditation as a Psychotherapist). I am also a volunteer with a local youth charity providing counselling for children and young people.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
Accredited Register Scheme
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
