About me

Hello, I'm Alison and I am a Person-Centred Counsellor and my focus is helping adults and young people overcome anxiety to feel more secure and happier. I help many clients work through stress due to work, education or changes in circumstances. In my private practice I offer Counselling, Psychotherapy and Support for adults and children (aged 11 years +). I offer a safe, warm and accepting secure base to explore difficult feelings and experiences.

Who Can I Help?

I help clients with a wide range of difficulties. I have a particular interest in working with adult clients who are experiencing stress, anxiety and/or relationship difficulties that feel stuck and unable to move on in life.

I enjoy working with children and young people and work with them in schools and private practice. Attachment difficulties and Autistic Spectrum disorder are areas of special interest for me.

What Am I Like?

I am a calm, approachable and friendly person that clients find easy to work with. I use a Person-Centred approach to psychotherapy that is based on empathy, acceptance, and congruence. It is the establishment of this safe and understanding relationship that supports the personal growth and development of my clients.

Finding help is the first stage in taking steps towards a better future. However, I do understand how daunting it can feel to ask for help for yourself or a child.

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience and Qualifications

Previously, I worked in education as a teacher and manager for 20 years before retraining to become a counsellor. I currently work in schools and in private practice.

I am a Registered Counsellor with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I am qualified to Masters level and hold an additional COSCA qualification in Counselling Children and Young People.

Member organisations

BACP

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.

Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.

All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Professional Reflection

Teaching is a very rewarding but often demanding and stressful profession. Within the working day teachers have little opportunity or time to professionally consider the difficulties and situations they encounter. Over time this can lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety and stress. This can have a negative impact on a teacher’s professional and personal life. I offer a confidential support service for educational leaders, experienced and newly qualified teachers and student teachers. Having the opportunity to reflect on your professional experiences and speak openly and freely to an experienced professional in confidence can help support your professional life and improve your personal life.

I offer this service in my private practice in Burnside. The frequency of meetings is entirely up to you and your requirements.

Accessibility

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
