About me

As a Gestalt Psychotherapist and Humanistic Counsellor I am able to offer a wide range of therapeutic expertise enabling me to work with a varied client base and content covering all manner of issues.
I have undertaken 14 plus years high level personal therapy which is well over and above my governing bodies requirements of an accredited member, whilst also undertaking regular Supervision with a UK Council for Psychotherapy registered Supervisor so that best practice can be adhered too in all of my therapeutic work.

I love my work as a Psychotherapist and passionately believe that we all have the inbuilt capacity to change and overcome even the most painful of histories and live life to the fullest of our potential. However, in today’s ever changing world, huge pressures are often placed upon us by our environment, and support & acceptance can be an all too rare commodity. During my work therefore, I will endeavour to offer hope, support, guidance and increased awareness which is integral in allowing us to live a life more in touch with both ourselves, and the world of others we populate.

This is achieved in part by increasing our self awareness of mind and body, which will serve to enhance your capacity for deeper, more meaningful and fluid contact with both yourself as well as others in the here and now. In less therapeutic jargon free terms I will be aiming to help you notice exactly where you are now, and attend more fully to what you are doing in the moment. This renewed focus will help you grasp how you have been structuring your life to date which will help to free you up from old blockages making you more able to step into the options available before you today with increased vigour.

As a Supervisor in training I am also able to offer reduced fee Supervision.

I have had a wide and varied life experience base prior to becoming a Psychotherapist spanning two continents, Africa and Europe. including formerly working at ground & management level on-shore and off-shore in the fields of construction & engineering industries. Creatively I have written, recorded and performed my own original music as a solo artist (included on my website under the header music lounge), academically, I have previously had research published in the European Journal for Qualitative research in Psychotherapy whilst having plans for more research in the offing. In my sporting life I have participated as a former amateur boxer and kick-boxer before injury and surgical intervention curtailed my progress. I have also delivered community sports programmes underpinned by experience gained as an assistant boxing coaching working with local boxers in both the amateur and professional code.
I have a particularly keen eye for continued Professional & Personal Development. After Qualification and subsequent accreditation, I have completed self funded further training in EMDR, Transactional Analysis, Mindfulness, Biosynthesis, Effective Intervention With Violent Behaviour, Couples Therapy, Experiential Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Imago Therapy and Meditation Training. I am also currently completing training as a Supervisor on the European Diploma in Supervision course.
In terms of Personal Development, we Psychotherapist practitioners registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy believe that self knowledge is paramount in enabling us to be at the cutting edge of therapeutic practice. In short the more we know about ourselves, the more effective we can be in assisting you the client. I have benefitted from excellent regular personal therapy post qualifying which is over and above even my Governing body UK Council for Psychotherapy robust standards and I believe a good indicator of both my Integrity and passion as a Psychotherapist.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UK Council for Psychotherapy

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

My initial introductory assessments are warm & relaxed, giving you the opportunity to get a 'feel' for me as a therapist at your own pace. You can then either choose to book in a subsequent session directly after our assessment, or alternatively decide to take some extra time after the assessment to mull over your decision. My initial assessment fee is £50.00, with aubsequent therapy sessions priced at £50 per session, they are generally best held once weekly.
Payment methods accepted are cash, cheque or internet transfers.

Supervision, sliding scale fee is available dependant on circumstances.

Further information

I work from a detached bungalow studio style building, standing alongside my home in Nunthorpe. Parking outside my therapy room is ample, and free.
I have toilet facilities & hot/cold drinks ready and available on site, and with both the A66 & A174 nearby, travel links are good.
I am also able to offer therapy on Skype and or telephone therapy if distance/travelling is a major issue.

Recent client feedback (check my website for plenty more)

What, if anything, have you learned about yourself over the duration of our work together, were there any standout moments?

"How do I answer this in a short paragraph, there is so much to say. You've helped me to love and respect myself, focus on my needs and not give away all my energy to others. Our sessions helped me to see that my default has been the 'rescuer/fixer'. With your help I've learnt how to resist throwing myself in to helping others to the detriment to myself, and to give from my bucket not my well.
I've learnt how to deal with difficult situations and not hold on to my emotions, pretending to everyone I had everything under control and I could keep going with my own issues and everyone else's problems. I thought I was Superwoman, I was a workaholic, had high exceptions of myself, in fast mode constantly and therefore able to deal with everything. I will now openly voice how I'm feeling and ask for help. I've learnt how to slow down and enjoy the moment.   I can still hear you saying 'slowly, slow down'. You made me see how my inner child still needed fun. I'm now much more aware of my inner child and have more fun, planning things into my day that I enjoy. You have taught me a number of valuable techniques which I refer to regularly."

Would you recommend therapy with me, and if so, why?

"Absolutely and already have recommended you. I openly talk about our sessions to family and friends, initially I was too proud and saw it as a weakness, I now realise it's not a weakness it shows strength. Always felt I could discuss everything, you made me feel I could be open and never judged me.
When I was looking for a therapist I was determined to speak to a male, I wanted someone to challenge me and not be all airy, fairy. Alex certainly met the criteria, he challenged me on a number of occasions. You listened and shared your own experiences. I felt you genuinely cared for my well being and I've made a true friend.
Thank you for your support."
