About me

We all experience difficult times, emotions and relationships at some stage in our lives. You are not alone. In choosing to look for support you have taken your first positive step towards feeling well. Seeking counselling can be a scary and confusing step to take. I know the thought of talking to someone about the difficulties you are experiencing can bring feelings of guilt, shame and weakness, however, I feel it takes great courage to reach out for support. I understand that first step can also be an important commitment. Which is why I feel it important for you to find the right therapist, as the quality of the relationship determines successful therapy.

As a fully qualified and BACP registered counsellor and psychotherapist I provide caring, professional, yet down to earth support which is confidential and non-judgemental in a safe environment. This can bring healing through, together, developing self-awareness, self-acceptance which aids growth and leads to change. I work with adults of all ages, from diverse backgrounds, with a variety of life issues and welcome clients of all gender identities and sexual orientations.

I have a private practice in Retford and Nottingham. Both venues have free parking, are well served by public transport and offer quiet, comfortable surroundings with a high degree of privacy.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a fully qualified counsellor and psychotherapist and a registered member of the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I adhere to their ethical framework, for good practice, by holding full professional insurance, an enhanced DBS certificate and being committed to continual professional development and regular supervision. Prior to becoming a psychotherapist I have a background of working in a caring capacity for over 25 years, in the private sector and the NHS. I gained a first class Bachelor of Science, with honours, in humanistic and integrative counselling and psychotherapy from The Sherwood Institute in Nottingham. My clinical experience includes working with adults in a variety of organisational settings including a counselling service for children and young adults, a bereavement counselling service and a counselling and support service for survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Why choose counselling?

We all, at some time in our lives, experience distressing events, difficult feelings or relationship issues. There are many different reasons why people choose to come to counselling. You may be experiencing grief or loss, feeling alone, swamped by responsibilities, overwhelmed with life changes, difficulties in relationships or struggling with anxiety or depression. It is at these times that talking to a trained counsellor can help.

I am an advocate of counselling and psychotherapy and believe in its value. I have seen again and again how people have benefited from counselling. Their quality of life has been enriched by re-connecting with their strengths, discovering and expressing their authentic, true self rather than the self they think they need to put forward for other people’s approval.

What happens in a therapy session?

Our first session together is an opportunity for us to meet each other and get a sense of what it might be like for us to work together and for you to decide if counselling can offer what you are looking for. It’s a chance for you to find out more about the therapy process, to discuss what you hope to achieve and look at any concerns you may have.

In further sessions you may gain new and useful insights, discover new ways of thinking or feeling about your life experiences or relationships, experiment with new behaviours or learn new strategies to help you cope better with the challenges you face.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed depends on the individual in relation to the nature and longevity of the difficulties they are experiencing. Some people may want to focus on a specific, relatively short lived problem, where a few sessions may be enough. However for some, the issue may be more deep-rooted and complex and long term counselling may be beneficial.

Most people find it helpful to book regular weekly appointments as this enables us to maintain momentum and develop trust. Ideally this would be on the same time and day, although I appreciate flexibility may be needed around work and family commitments.
