Training, qualifications & experience
I first trained as a counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Care NI some 20 years ago and in my 10 years with Cruse, I gained a wealth of experience in dealing with loss and grief and the many issues which can arise out of bereavement. During this time I studied at the University of Ulster where I obtained a post grad diploma with commendation in counselling.
I went on to work for 10 years as an addiction counsellor and this gave me experience in working with the many issues which can underlie addiction such as anxiety and depression, anger, low self worth, relationship problems or sexual abuse. My approach to counselling is essentially person centred, so thoughts and feelings are explored empathically and non judgementally and in an atmosphere of trust. I will also use other approaches when appropriate.
When someone contacts me, we make a first appointment and in that session explore the problem and look at whether I may be able to help. You also see whether you feel this is the right place for you and if you wish to engage in counselling, usually on a weekly basis.
