A. Liam Firth
As a compassion focused therapist at heart, I work to create secure and confidential time for you to explore your presenting issues in a non-judgemental safe space.
A caring relationship between client and counsellor is foundational and is what makes counselling therapeutic and beneficial.
I apply various educational models and practices to help you develop self-awareness, inner-compassion and personal-development to bring about lasting progression with difficulties such as anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and confidence and more.
It is a personal drive of mine to support those in difficult situations find a way forward in a holistic and self-empowering way so that our time together is your progress.
I often say: we are primarily taught how to function in the physical. We are taught to walk, talk, go to school, pass tests, get a job, pay bills... All physical reality stuff. We are seldom taught about our inner reality, our thoughts and feelings: what they are, what they mean, how to process them and use them for our benefit.
In my experience, clients have found this often short but practical journey to be liberating, freeing and life changing.
If you feel that you are fielding thoughts and feelings all day and not making progress, perhaps counselling can help. I would look forward to exploring this with you.
How to contact me and what to expect:
As with most first sessions, we will explore what it is you are wanting to achieve from our counselling sessions. We will look at what it is you are carrying, the impact this has and what support you feel would help you at this time. Here I can make clinical recommendations and we can plot a course forwards.
If I am confident I can support, we can explore further sessions where we can begin to work through the challenges and hopefully build positive change.
Periodically I will conduct check in reviews to adapt to the progression of the sessions and this gives us both opportunity to reflect, collaborate together and course correct as needed.
If you would like to book in a preliminary session then please feel free to contact me via SMS or email and we can arrange contact to book in for Zoom or Telephone sessions.
Training, qualifications & experience
As a member of the BACP, I am qualified and work to an ethical standard while continuing my education and professional development.
My focus in sessions is the facilitation of self-empowerment, personal and spiritual development, education and the integrative healing and recovery of my clients.
I am experienced in supporting clients with a range of presenting issues. Some areas I am experienced in supporting are:
Anxiety and Depression: Develop understanding, awareness, skills and strategies to accept, challenge and rise from what can often be overwhelming.
Bereavement and Grief: Guiding those who have suffered loss, through either death, breakup or separation, to find a healing way forward into the next era of their life.
Emotional Regulation and Processing: Emotional resistance is an instinctual reflex. Through exploration and guidance, lets turn resistance into resilience.
LGBTQ+ and Identity: The world is changing but it may not be where you need it to be yet. Life may feel stuck in confusion, isolation or intolerance. If you have something to express, I am here to receive you.
ADD/ADHD: As someone who has struggled with this neurodivergence myself, I have not only compassion, but space for you to explore what it is like for you with this condition. What is normal? What is personal? What can we do to build your life, your way?
Relationships and social development: Life is all about connection, and in this can come conflict and difficulty as we move through life. I bet you have a reason to feel what you are feeling but have you been heard?
- Recovering from difficult relationships and Narcissistic abuse:
Have you been in a difficult relationship? Isolated while together? Unheard, unseen, unsafe? Nothing was ever good enough, you are left feeling like the problem? Abuse is not always physical. Physical wounds heal. Inner wounds stick. Maybe you aren't alone. Maybe it wasn't you!
Understanding childhood memories and trauma: Some things are incomprehensible, overwhelming and in our foundational years, we manage the only way we can with things we can't possibly be prepared for. Everyone carries something from childhood but some burdens are heavier. What are you carrying? What do you need to relieve?
I use integration of various approaches in my practice from therapeutic fields and models. Some of these are:
Compassion Focused and Person-Centred: For safety, security, reception and trust.
PEMS (Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual): For awareness and practical skills for navigating the human condition.
Psychodynamic: For dot-connecting, self-exploration and understanding.
Transactional Analysis (TA): For relationship dynamics and interpersonal navigation.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): For skills practice of the mind and taking back control of the wheel.
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT): For short term actionable change for a particular point of focus.
Motivational Coaching: For confidence building and life orienteering. Regardless of your shampoo, you are worth it!
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
Accredited register membership
