I am an experienced and BACP-accredited counsellor and an EMDR Europe accredited Practitioner. Counselling offers space for you to talk about your problems in a confidential setting, and find ways of coping better. We all have hidden resources inside,and counselling can help us to tap into these resources, resolve inner conflicts, increase our self-esteem and resilience, and have better relationships.
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapeutic approach which enables the brain to heal memories of distressing past experiences, which at the time were not adequately processed and filed away. These "stuck" memories can give rise to difficulties, such as anxiety or low self-esteem, which may surface many years later. By stimulating the brain's natural self-healing abilities, EMDR therapy appears to enable the nervous system to process, or "file", the memory, by connecting the part of the brain where the memory is stored with another part, which has the useful information necessary to resolve the problem. This results in a reduction in distressing symptoms, including flashbacks and triggers, and a more neutral or helpful perspective on the past experience.
I have a particular interest in Attachment-Focused EMDR as developed by Laurel Parnell. This approach focuses on relationship difficulties in childhood, and their continuing effect into adult relationships.
EMDR therapy is practised in many countries, and is consistently reported in research to be effective in significantly reducing or eliminating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) and the World Health Organization as a treatment for PTSD. It is also being successfully used by EMDR practitioners to treat symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems and low self-esteem. My focus is on working with you as quickly as possible while ensuring that you feel safe, and confident that your issues are being addressed
EMDR is also very effective in helping you to use your imagination to develop inner resources which you can use outside sessions, and these resources can also reduce trauma symptoms.
I sometimes suggest simple, effective mindfulness techniques to use in conjunction with counselling and/or EMDR to aid the healing process. I have been practising daily mindfulness for about four years, and find it very beneficial in helping me to live more in the here-and-now.
