About me

Most people at some point in their life experience emotional or relationship difficulties. These can be short term problems, which are reactions to life events, as well as difficulties you may have been struggling with over a longer period of time.

I believe that counselling can offer a safe and confidential environment to explore issues, develop a greater understanding of difficulties and to make sense of what is happening in your life.

My aim is to enable you to maximise personal choice and potential that encourages a more fulfilling and satisfying life

  • I have over 16 years experience in working with a wide range of issues including bereavement, anxiety, relationship difficulties, childhood trauma, anger management and low self-esteem.

COUPLES AND RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING:

My belief is that conducting a long-term, close and monogamous relationship is a lot harder than most of us ever imagined it could be. On the one hand our biological drives, designed to ensure survival of the species, work against our remaining faithful to just one partner and, on the other, society promotes a fairy-tale version of marriage which is unsustainable. Many people enter a relationship thinking the honeymoon will go on forever, only to find their expectations shattered and themselves locked in conflict with their partner or confused by feelings of failure.

Despite this, I believe that relationships are what make people mature and grow as human beings. Living alone, we can stagnate and become rigid in our thinking. Managing individual growth within a relationship requires commitment and respect for the other and can be an acutely painful process but is, I believe, ultimately hugely rewarding. Counselling can help couples re-evaluate their expectations of each other and their relationship by providing a safe environment to explore sensitive issues, by aiding communication and by bringing an understanding of the difficulties that couples often confront.

SUPERVISION:

I am a relational, integrative-humanistic therapist and I offer supervision from a framework of the person-centred core conditions of acceptance, respect and genuineness. I work with counsellors who have trained in a variety of different orientations in which I am experienced including: Gestalt, TA and CBT.

I work to the BACP defined tasks of supervision i.e. managerial/normative; educational/formative and supportive/restorative

Through reflection and exploration of your work with clients, my aim is to help you to:

• understand the client better
• become more aware of your own reactions and responses to the client
• understand the dynamics of how you and your client are interacting
• look at how you have intervened and the results of your interventions
• explore other ways of working with this and other similar client situations
• develop your own potential and personal style

In my own counselling practice, I have been fortunate to work with supervisors who have made it safe to share any concerns I may have had with my client work. I know from this personal experience how important it is to have this safe space. I aim to build a positive, collaborative working relationship so you feel able to bring everything you need to supervision to get the support and guidance you want.
