About me

Chartered Counselling Psychologist specialized in Schema therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Compassion focused therapy with more than 25 years experience in the treatment of mental health issues. Registered with all major insurance companies.

I see clients privately as a counselling psychologist and supervisor in CBT and Schematherapy. Furthermore I am a Director at the Academy of Schema Therapy where we train people for accreditation in Schema Therapy with the International Society of Schema therapy.

CBT is a form of therapy that helps people to function better and ultimately helps them to develop their own coping skills. It teaches people to understand the way their thoughts, feelings and behaviour are related and how that might keep them anxious or depressed. By finding different perspectives and by replacing unhelpful behaviour with constructive behaviour the client and the therapist work together towards concrete goals, which the client sets out at the start of therapy.

CBT is the first treatment of choice for depression and most anxiety disorders (generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, OCD) according to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines.

Schematherapy is an innovative therapy dealing with so-called schema's: longstanding problematic patterns of feelings, thoughts and behaviour that originated in childhood and remain to cause distress into adulthood. Schematherapy looks at basic emotional needs of people that were not met in childhood and continue to not be met into adulthood. Everybody has schema's but some people have more maladaptive schema's that hinder them in their lives. For example in the domain of feeling disconnected and rejected by people or feeling that you have to be extremely focused on pleasing others and forget about your own needs. Other schema domains refer to feeling that you always need other people to help you in life or that you feel you have to be very strict and can never be spontaneous or that you have few limits and find it very hard to stick to rules and boundaries. All of these issues generally cause emotional problems in people's lives and in their relationships.
