I am a Psychoanalytical psychotherapist. The therapy is based on the observation that we sometimes try to deal with problems by trying to keep them out of our mind as a way of getting rid of them. However, they will continue to have an important effect on our feelings and behaviour. Early experiences are important in shaping the way the mind works but a large part of our mind operates outside our consciousness. From an early age, we find ways of managing our experiences and this influences how we cope in later life. My aim as a therapist is to help you to gradually come to understand these experiences and make sense of how you have dealt with them. This leads to a process of change, which takes place through the session.
The relationship with the therapist is an important part of the therapy. I can offer a confidential, safe and private place where the unconscious patterns of your inner world can be played out. The safe setting that I create means that emotional conflicts can be relived and new solutions can be found to old problems. This process helps us to identify those patterns of behaviour, which we keep repeating. As we become aware of old patterns, it is possible to change them.

Before training as a psychotherapist I worked as a psychiatric nurse specialising in Children and Families. I obtained a post graduated Diploma in Psychotherapy Skills in 1998. I then worked as a psychotherapist in NHS for two years before becoming a joint proprietor of Steppingstone, a therapuetic community and worked there from 1990 to 1999. During this time I also studied for and obtained a Post Graduate Certificate in the Psychoanalytical Study of The Couple Relationship from the Tavistock Clinic and worked as a Relate Counsellor. I went on to train as a social worker and between 2000-2009 worked in a varity of social work settings. During this time I gained a Master Degree in psychoanalytical psychotherapy and returned to working as a psychotherapist in the NHS.
