Sue Kirtley MBACP, Counsellor and Counselling Supervisor
01494 863051 / 07703 811624
Life throws up all sorts of difficulties, anxieties and challenges and sometimes it helps to talk things through with someone who is not involved and who may be able to support you as you work through the difficulty or find a way to cope with it. I aim to create a space where you feel comfortable to share your thoughts and feelings about whatever brings you to seek help.
I work with many different issues, including problems in family relationships, family issues, of coping with unexpected situations and change of circumstances, of life changes and adjustments, of unexpected and chronic illness, relationship issues, low self-esteem and self-confidence, feeling sad, depression, anxiety, coping with challenges which others are unaware of, problems with child related issues, parenting, particularly in relation to challenging children and teenagers, ADHD, anti social and illegal behaviour in children. I work with adults, young adults and teenagers. My practice is supported by a Supervisor who enables me to talk and think about my work and develop my practice so that I can offer the best possible environment to my clients.
Working with adults and young adults
The most important part of counselling is that we “click” and that usually happens fairly quickly if it is going to. I am at a stage of life where very little surprises me and I hope you will feel comfortable to share whatever troubles you. We can then decide what may be helpful in working out a way forward. It is difficult to say what that might be because each client is unique but but my core training is in "person-centred" work and I have training in CBT and Coaching which we can bring in if it seems appropriate and you are in agreement.
Teenagers and Secondary School Age Clients
During my training and when I qualified I worked as a school counsellor where students brought many different life issues. I have separated my work in this area as I believe that the way that this client group react and manage life challenges is unique to their time of life. I work with issues of bereavement, the impact of divorce and relationship difficulties in families and with peers and general and school problems. I have also seen that exams issues and pressures, together with the stress of life events during these times cause great anxiety and even panic for young people at such an important point in their lives. Some one to one help in the exams period can provide extra support and strategies which can make a difference to the way in which a young person copes with their exams and hopefully to the outcome. Equally I am happy to see small groups, up to 4, to talk about coping with exams. This keeps the cost down and may make it more comfortable for teenagers if peers come together.
The first session
I offer an initial 30 minute session free with an option to stay for an additional half hour at a cost of £25. The basis for helpful therapy is that you feel comfortable talking to me and that usually happens fairly quickly if it is going to. In this first meeting we will talk about what you are struggling with and what you hope to get out of counselling and after that session you can decide whether you would like to embark on some counselling with me. This can be a few sessions or longer term and can be re-evaluated at any time.
Whatever your problem or your stage of life, please give me a call or send me an email and see if we think I might be able to help.
