Relationship Counselling is my speciality. I am a fully qualified Counsellor with 30 years experience both with Relate and in Private Practice where I have worked with both Couples and Individuals. I also work with Adult Family Members looking at relationships within their family. Working with relationship issues includes looking that such things as anxiety, low self esteem, abuse, depression and bereavement.
Relationships are at the heart of life and therefore impact on how we function as individuals. I believe that in the age in which we live there is much focus on the individual. This results in an increasng number of relationships that break down. Relationships need to be continually maintained (much as a car needs fuel and a regular service to function well). The relationship counselling that I provide will focus not only on the couple but also on the individual and how those two individuals "fit" together.
When relationships go wrong it can be painful and distressing. Talking to someone in confidence about this, either individually or as a couple, can be enormously helpful as it can begin to give some understanding about why a relationship is not working. For instance, looking at patterns of how we relate differently to different people. My aim is to help to gain some understanding of why whatever it is, is not working, and as a way to begin to see in what direction to move forward.
I also work with issues such as separation and divorce, sexuality, domestic abuse, past sexual abuse, mental health issues including depression and anxiety, and how all this impacts on couple and family relationships.
Clients are often nervous about making a first move into counselling so I am happy for anyone interested in counselling to either e mail or ring me. Contact details are on my website.
I am trained Psychodynamically and Systemically. This means that I work with clients by looking at their current situation and by exploring how the past has influenced the present. I also help them to look at how they relate to those around them, family members, friends and colleagues and to gain a new understanding of these relationships.
In addition I work with the impact that serious illness or the death of someone close may have had on an indidvidual and/or on their relationships; the impact of past abuse - sexual, physical or psychological/emotional; and the impact of growing up in a family where parents have separated.
In addition I offer general counselling on issues such as low self esteem, bereavement, work related problems, low level depression, and also with the influence of major life events.
I am also a qualified and experienced Counselling Supervisor having worked in this role for more than 23 years.

Supervision & training
I am an experienced Supervisor of Couple, Relationship and Individual Counselling of 20 years. I trained originally as a Supervisor with Relate in 1993/94 and have worked continually as a Supervisor since. In 1999/2000 I did an additional Supervisor training: 'Advanced Diploma in the Supervision of Counsellors' at Birmingham University which was led by Prof Sue Wheeler. (I continued to take a further three modules at Birmingham in Training Counsellors (2) and Counselling in Primary Care which gave me a BPhil). I also worked in Relate for 10 years in a role where I offered consultancy to Supervisors for their Supervision work.View supervision profile
