My name is Gillian and I have been a practising counsellor in Woking (nr Guildford and Weybridge) for the past 13 years. I am committed to providing counselling in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment.
I work with individuals on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period, with the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.
I am what is known as a integrative counsellor which means that I use several approaches to counselling. Psychosynthesis incorporates a wholistic approach and acknowledges every individuals unique experience.

We are all valuable and worthwhile people and I treat all my clients with the unconditional regard we all deserve.
Very recently I trained in Basic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - CBT, which is a different approach to counselling than Psychosynthesis, but can also be encorporated along with it. CBT examines our behaviour and our thoughts and can be very effective with Depression, Anxiety, Obsessive and Panic Disorders etc.
I also worked voluntarily with Surrey Alcohol and Drug Advisory Services in Guildford for two years, where I counselled adults with Addiction problems.
Alcohol, Drugs, co-dependency issues, etc.......
(However I do not see clients with drug and alcohol related issues privately
anymore.) It is always better to go to an organization like the AA where you find support.
I am committed to ongoing training and constantly updating my knowledge.
What to expect from Counselling?
- Some people may have never been to see a counsellor before..... and sometimes this can be slightly anxiety provoking because you do not know what to expect.
Maybe some people have experienced counselling before and have found it helpful or unhelpful..... Whatever your experience, I would like to just say a little about what counselling is and isn't.
Counselling is a place to explore what might be going on in your life at present, in complete confidentiality. It is also a place that you can examine whether you feel comfortable with me, because this is very important. If you do not feel comfortable, you are free to look elsewhere. You are confiding personal information to someone, therefore you need to feel that you can trust someone with this information. Counselling gives you the opportunity to really examine what might be going on for you and requires the need for honesty on your part. We can all be afraid at times to really look at our lives and it takes a considerable amount of courage to do this. I am here to help you explore, by asking certain questions and sometimes showing a different perspective, also at times by making connections between past and present beliefs. I sometimes use drawing and imagery to help the process. At all times I believe in your ability to see your own worth and potential. I do not wave a magic wand over you, but enable you to try and help yourself. I am not here to give advice. Advice is something that can be conditional. I am here to accept you unconditionally and non-judgmentally. Ultimately we all have a choice to decide which way we want to go, hopefully a way that feels right for us and this is my role in our sessions to help you find your way. You may come with a set idea of how long you wish to come to counselling, if so please share this with me. Sometimes it may only take a few sessions to help you on your way. It really depends on you and what your difficulty is. With some people it may take longer and I tend to review with my clients every 4 to 6 weeks to see how they are feeling about coming to sessions.

I worked for the Portsmouth Counselling Service in Fratton for 3 years and this was my original placement, where I first started to see adult clients, some of whom were referred by their doctor.
I have also worked voluntarily for the University College of Creative Arts in Farnham as a student counsellor. I was there for a year and a half, seeing students from aged 18yrs upwards.
I also have a private practice from my home and have seen clients privately for
3 years. I have a small room that is private from the rest of the house, so confidentiality is assured.
Training, qualifications & experience
- BSc (Hons) Degree in Psychology. (Open University)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Psychosynthesis Counselling. (BACP Accredited Course.)
- I am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
- Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre Certificate in Basic Cognitive behavioural Therapy. (BACP Accr. course)
- Certificate in Drugs and Alcohol Counselling. (SADAS Training.)
I have attended various workshops and am committed to ongoing training.

Other areas of counselling I deal with
The first session is an Assessment where I take a little bit of information about you, to give me a "bigger picture". It is also a time for you to ask me any questions you may have about me or counselling. I then hand the session over to you to tell me what the difficulty might be and what you are hoping to achieve. I feel this also gives you a chance to meet me and decide if you wish to continue.
All sessions are for 1 hour and fees for sessions are £40 per hour.
I will discuss a lower fee for those with financial difficulty.
