About me

My name is Jo and I am a registered Counsellor/psychotherapist.  I usually work weekdays and Saturday mornings in Syston, but am currently restricting my social contact and offering purely online and telephone counselling for the time being. Whichever way we work, my aim is to provide an opportunity for clients to explore their difficulties without fear of being judged or told what to do.

We all experience problems in our lives but sometimes the nature of the problem or the circumstances surrounding it can leave us feeling overwhelmed; confused; ashamed etc.
By talking to someone who is really hearing what we are saying (and not saying) we may begin to understand how we truly feel; what is needed to cope and how we might move forward.

Some of the issues people bring are listed below but many other areas can be looked at :

Feelings of stress, anxiety
Low self-esteem
Feelings of worthlessness
Relationship difficulties or breakdown
Family issues
Separation and divorce
Physical illness
Childhood issues that continue to be problematic
Death of someone close whether suddenly or over a period of time
Loss of many kinds including relational, job, home, pet, identity etc
Times of change - big or small including
Trauma - recent or historical including abuse of any kind
Living with chronic illness
Retirement issues
Terminal illness
Employment issues

And then of course we have the current Coronavirus situation which is likely to bring a number of challenges for many people. From the loss of loved ones; difficulties around social isolation; loss of coping strategies or routine; feeling trapped or in danger or the immediacy of needing to redress the balance of working on the frontline or other key worker areas.

Help is also often sought in response to feelings such as 'nothing fits together any more' or 'everything is just too much'. These feelings may have come about because of a specific event (such as those listed above) or may have gradually crept up on you over a period of time and you cannot understand why they are there or why now.

Whatever issues are facing you, my role is to actively listen and support you in exploring what is happening and to help you find answers that really work for you. Since each person's life is unique in so many ways, it follows that your therapy will also be unique. As a Person-Centred Therapist, this means that each person and the issues they bring will be looked at without making assumptions that they need to do this or do that. Together we will tailor each session to your needs and work at your pace.

Ongoing Personal Development:
I also offer sessions to people who wish to touch base on a less frequent basis to therapeutically look at what is generally happening for them. This type of meeting is useful for those who have perhaps already experienced therapy and are now looking to discuss things such as work opportunities; relationship changes; family dynamics etc. Some people find this gives them the space to verbalise and explore general life situations and enables them re-ground themselves in their own decisions etc.

Support for Counselling/Psychotherapy Trainees:
I offer therapeutic support to Trainees and am on the approved lists of many Universities and Organisations. I am very aware of the expectations of most study programmes and am happy to complete reports etc during our meeting times at no extra cost..

Training, qualifications & experience

My experience covers a wide range of issues and I work on both a long and short-term basis depending on the needs of the client at that time.

I have a Masters in Humanistic Person-Centred Psychotherapy.
I am accredited/Registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

The above gives a flavour of the areas I work with but many other areas and aspects are covered too. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your needs further.

Additional information

The first meeting is usually a little different as it is designed to enable us to meet, without obligation, and jointly assess whether counselling/psychotherapy with me is the best option at this time.

My fees are :
Individuals: £45 per session (50 minutes)
Couples:     £55 per session (50 minutes)

Sessions can be paid for in advance by bank transfer and I also offer a 10% discount for block payments for 5 or more sessions.

I can offer concessions to 2 clients per week which would depend on personal circumstances etc. If you would like to be considered for a concession we can discuss this subject to spaces being available.

If for any reason we feel that I would not be the right person for you to work with (perhaps because I work with someone very close to you) then I will do my best to help you find another therapist or organisation that could help.

Therapy trainees:
I offer therapy trainees a discounted rate of £40 per session if paid weekly.  They can also have 10% discount for block bookings.

I am currently offering online video and telephone counselling sessions during the day Monday to Friday and also Saturday mornings.
