Matthew Byng MBACP (Accred), EMDR Accredited Practitioner
If you are unhappy. haunted by memories of past trauma or facing a particular difficulty then counselling and EMDR (specific trauma therapy) can help you regain your peace of mind.
Coronavirus and the changes that have come with it, have altered our lives, reducing our freedom and choices, bringing our mortality into sharp focus.
Managing the fear, chaos and other peoples' demands can be stressful, triggering unbidden memories from the past. Counselling and EMDR can help process this history, reducing its knack of surprising and upsetting, helping you move towards acceptance. You may not forget the memory but our work can remove the painful emotions.
I am a person-centred counsellor accredited by BACP. Person-centred means that I believe inside all of us is the capacity for positive growth. Our life's events and experiences have dented and restricted this capacity. The understanding and resolution that can be reached from receiving Counselling and EMDR, can remove these barriers, enabling personal growth.
My personal experience of therapy showed me this and I have also witnessed it in my clients.
Many of us live with the fear and anxiety associated with trauma from old events that hasn't faded with time. You may have spent years trying to keep this old pain out of sight, perhaps closed off in a separate box inside you, but it keeps escaping and upsetting your life. As an accredited EMDR therapist I can help you re-connect with this wounded part of yourself safely and process these old emotions so that they become memories, no longer having the power to disturb you.
As we grow in understanding of our patterns and wounding, we free ourselves to grow positively in our own unique direction. I can offer you a compassionate and authentic relationship in which you will feel valued and understood. This can give you the opportunity to explore issues, some of which may live only on the edge of your consciousness. Reflecting on your past will help you reduce their weight so that you can focus on living here and now.
At the moment I see clients individually online with Zoom or on the phone from my secure and confidential counselling room in Rodborough. I find that therapy can be equally as safe, effective and relational using these ways of meeting as meeting in person.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a Registered and Accredited Member of BACP and an EMDR Accredited Practitioner with EMDR UK & Ireland.
I have practiced as a person-centred counsellor since 2002. For over 10 years I have been counselling clients in residential rehabilitation where they have been in the early stages of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Many of my clients have used addiction to manage their historic childhood traumas and for 5 years I have successfully used EMDR to remove the weight of the disturbing emotions associated with these events.
I have a Diploma in Counselling Supervision from Severn Talking Therapy.
I completed my EMDR training with Sandi Richman in 2015.
I also taught the Counselling Level 4 Diploma at Stroud College for 10 years, leaving the College in Summer 2019.
Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
BACP is one of the UK’s largest professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy. Therapists registered with the Association fall into a number of different membership categories such as Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP and Registered Member MBACP (Accred), each standing for different levels of training and experience. MBACP (Accred) and MBACP (Snr Accred) members have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by the Association.
Registered members can be found on the BACP Register, which was the first register to achieve Accredited Voluntary Register status issued by the Professional Standards Authority. Individual Members will have completed an appropriate counselling and/or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but will not appear on the BACP Register until they've progressed to Registered Member MBACP status.
All members are bound by a Code of Ethics & Practice and a Complaints Procedure. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Areas of counselling I deal with
Other areas of counselling I deal with
I work with clients that experienced the trauma of being sent away to boarding school as a child, both prep school at age 8, and public school at age 13. The residue from the abandonment and shame of being 'sent away' can often corrupt adult relationships, making contact with areas of authenticity and vulnerability especially difficult.
My fees are £50 for a fifty minute session.
