I am an experienced and qualified counsellor, registered and validated by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy. I live in Essex, and work there and in London. My initial training was at the University of London, and since then I have done further training, in areas such as bereavement, dynamic interpersonal therapy, cognitive analytic therapy, and mindfulness. I also attend courses and lectures at the local University in the general area of therapy.
I came into the profession after a background in management in a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors, including the NHS, and I have also taught for many years in the University Sector. Other work included developing programmes overseas for the British Council, and working in the private sector in the City on individual career development.
Counselling training grew naturally from this earlier work and experience, and forms a basis for further training and development.
What is my approach?
The client is always at the centre of the work, and so I approach the client in an integrative way, considering the whole person in relation to their individual sets of emotions, circumstances and experiences. This helps to illuminate what is happening for the individual, and to begin to make sense of some of their distress. This is partly through making links between past experiences and present behaviours, which then helps to make painful or difficult feelings and behaviours clearer. This understanding helps in managing these feelings, making life easier and clearer.
Training, qualifications & experience
My training, qualifications and experience reflect my working and personal life. Initially I qualified as a librarian, and obtained a Masters degree in this area. Work experience and teaching led into qualifying as a teacher, and working as a lecturer in the University sector. This led into qualifying as a counsellor, obtaining a Masters degree, and becoming qualified and registered with the appropriate professional bodies.
I also supervise trainee counsellors, as well as experienced practitioners. My style is collaborative and non-directional, with the appropriate professional bodies.
