About me

I am a Registered Member of BACP, hold a Post Graduate Diploma (PgDip) in Counselling adults plus a PgDip specifically in Counselling Children & Young People. In addition, I have completed a Certificate in Clinical and Case Supervision which is Approved by the BPS (British Psychological Society). I work therapeutically with clients from 5+ years to adults mainly from a Psychodynamic perspective, however, Cognitive Behavioural, Creative and Solution-Focused Therapies are integrated as and when required. In addition to face-to-face counselling I also offer other access opportunities for counselling: Online - ZOOM and also over the telephone; which may suit those who have child care difficulties or prefer not to travel.

Therapeutic Time-Frame offered:
I offer both short/fixed-term counselling and long-term psychotherapy to adults, children and young people as individuals, siblings, family groups and couples. I also work with clients referred through The Autistic Society, Dr's Surgeries, Employee Assistance schemes and trainee counsellor's who require personal counselling or supervision as part of their Accreditation process.

I have worked closely with individuals and groups of all ages for well over 30 years and aim to make all clients feel welcome, 'heard', supported and acknowledged in my private premises in Midlothian, Scotland.

Professional Membership:
I am a Registered Member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and am bound by their Ethical Framework for good practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and subject to their Professional Conduct Procedure.
I also meet BACP's requirements for supervision of my work with clients, and undertake 30 hours minimum per annum of Continuing Professional Development.

Why counselling or Psychotherapy?

Many people come to counselling to address problems resulting from distressful events in early life, often these distressful events continue to make a repetitive impact on present-day living.

Have you ever wondered why you over-eat, drink too much, find it difficult to ask for what you want or keep making the same relationship 'mistakes' over and over again?

Poor relationships, issues with others, bereavement, divorce, lack of confidence and feelings of low self esteem, stress, hopelessness, anger and depression are just some of the things that can make life difficult to cope with.
The internet can add to your problems; such as anxiety and trauma created through online-dating, compulsive buying, psychosexual compulsions and gambling addictions.

Child related issues:
Children and young people suffer too, I feel more at present than any point in the past. Distress can stem from family break-ups, blended families, sibling rivalry and cyber bullying. Which might be expressed as defiance, withdrawal or aggression, school refusal, truanting and other behaviour difficulties? .
Exam stress is another possibility, and in addition learning can be particularly difficult for those requiring additional support; Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD/DD and Autism, for instance.

What can counselling do?
Counselling is a two-way process which can lead to sustainable change and a more fulfilling life.
Whether adult, adolescent or child, counselling can make all the difference, by providing a safe place to explore and express feelings of pain, resentment, misunderstanding and confusion experienced through the stressful events that often befall us.

Through the counselling process you can learn to understand and make sense of these disappointments and to develop an awareness of how your emotions can be understood, managed and displayed appropriately.

What is psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is generally classed as a longer-term 'talking therapy' however I also practice in a more short-term, creative and flexible manner. Some clients experience great difficulty with expressing their feelings through language alone; feelings of frustration, anger and anxiety can arise through trying to find the right 'words'. It is at this point creativity can appear the 'magic key'; expression is made more simple, no longer do words have to be spoken as its the 'image' that does the 'talking'.

How to make an Appointment?

Making that first step towards an appointment can feel very difficult, as the realisation you need help can be quite distressing in itself. However I try to make the process as straight-forward as possible.

You can contact me either by telephone, text or email (details below). I will reply by text, email or telephone to discuss your situation in more detail. I will also explain the counselling process and talk through fees and cancellation requirements. You are under no obligation at this point, so feel free to consider whether counselling is going to be 'right' for you before you make any further commitment.

Attending an Assessment Interview is the next step. Here we take the time to explore your difficulties in more depth, consider your concerns and answer your questions. I will then explain how I plan to work with your particular concern.
If you believe my particular approach will be of benefit to you and we decide to go ahead, a regular appointment time will be agreed and a contract prepared and signed by both of us.

For an outline of the fees, please refer to the Fees section below.

The child, an eight-year-old boy, was bottled up like a pressure cooker. We must disguise his circumstances, but we can safely paint the general picture. His father had died when he was 5; his mother remarried; the stepfather abused both mother and son; the second marriage foundered.

Additional Experience:
In addition to practicing as a counsellor and psychotherapist, I have a background in art & design and education with over 33 years' of professional experienced as a school teacher in Primary, Secondary and Special Schools (including work with children suffering Asperger's Syndrome), and as a Further Education Lecturer as a Sugarcraft Artist within the Hospitality Sector for 17 years, teaching; Art & Design, Sugarcraft, Skills for Life and Work and TVEI school groups programmes.

Broad educational expertise gained: Trainer of Trainers, a Subject Specialist Consultant and Visiting Assessor for the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) and External Verifier for CGLI (City & Guilds of London Institute). This knowledge affords me a good understanding of the education system.

Creativity:
My Art and Design background underpins my therapeutic approach to working with children and young people. as they appear to benefit from this more creative, flexible format. Often words alone appear 'clumsy', insufficient or unavailable.

In my experience, many adults appear to be intimidated by the idea of creativity but I firmly believe all forms of expression should be made available for my clients to choose from. As a result my therapy room is furnished with an array of expressive and creative 'outlets' that backs-up the standard 'talking therapies'.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Additional information

What will it cost?

Counselling sessions last for 1 hour in full, including the time needed for reviewing and booking further sessions.  However, in certain circumstances; for couple/family work, longer sessions can be arranged if required. Most clients elect to attend therapy on a weekly basis at the beginning and reduce contact as their difficulties become more manageable.

In general, I operate a sliding scale: (However fees can be negotiated for those less able to pay)
£65 - for individual adults;
£85 to £95 - For couples, sibling groups and family group work;
£65 - For children and young people under the age of 16;

£65 to £90 - For a 60 to 75 minute Initial Assessment Consultation (every client must undergo an assessment consultation before the therapy process can start) Usually this process is completed within I hour. Please let me know at the beginning of the session if you have a specific time limit.

A 72-hour cancellation policy is in place whether sessions are paid for individually or block-booked.

Block-booking and paying in total for a series of 10 counselling sessions or more will reduce the overall cost by up to 10%. (Withdrawing from therapy within this time-frame, will result in the fee reverting to the standard sessional rate; any monies due will be refunded on this basis)

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Help is offered to those requiring wheelchair mobility. 2 small steps to access garden then one further low step to enter my counselling premises. These options would require the client to evacuate their wheelchair whilst the chair is lifted manually.
