About me

Highly qualified and experienced counsellor/psychotherapist with 19 years practice in the mental health sector. I work with individuals and couples who need support for issues such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, relationship problems, family issues and a wide range of other life challenges. I provide online counselling as well as face to face. For a full list of the areas I cover, please see the list of issues further down the page.

My style of working is adapted to the specific needs of my clients. I endeavour to provide a safe, supportive and non-judgemental environment. Either as a couple or individual, together we would explore your experiences and feelings, concentrating on what you consider most important. Integrative therapy is designed to have a flexible approach which enables the counsellor to closely follow your unique way of experiencing the world and adapt to the different types of issues you bring to counselling.

Working closely along side you, my aim would be to help you make sense of your issues and/or to explore ways of approaching them in a potentially different way to find resolution or accept where you are in life.

I offer long or short term counselling/psychotherapy. I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their code of ethics and complaints procedure.

EXPERIENCE:

Service Manager of Newport school based counselling service (University of South Wales) I managed the service in Newport from 2012 until 2019 including project managing the design and implementation of the online counselling service for young people. Prior to that, I coordinated the schools counselling service in the Vale of Glamorgan from 2010. Through these roles I gained substantial experience in the complexities and issues that are brought to counselling. This has provided me with the knowledge and experience regarding the significant responsibilities that a counsellor needs to be aware of and respond to in terms of the legal, ethical and statutory obligations in the duty of care to clients.

Visiting Lecturer
in counselling (University of South Wales)
Since 2012 I have lectured in counselling for the University of South Wales on various counselling courses.

Clinical Supervisor for counsellors in:
Private practice
Schools
Organisations

I have worked as a counsellor in the following environments:

  • Cardiff University (student & staff counselling)
  • Colleg Gwent
  • Barnardo's
  • Private Practice
  • Employee Assistance Programme

Through my work at these establishments, I have gained valuable insight into the many challenges that life presents and how people sometimes struggle to manage these. The diverse range of clients I have had the privilege to work with, have provided me with the knowledge that each person is different and will approach their unique set of circumstances in different ways. This may depend on gender, age, culture, religion, sexuality, upbringing, current environment and a number of other complex factors. I have also gained a depth of understanding into the various issues that clients have brought to me (e.g. anxiety, depression, childhood sexual abuse, suicidal thoughts, gay community issues, relationship problems, work issues, stress, anger, health anxiety, porn addiction, and more). My approach is therefore based on a flexible working model which will be in unison with the client to match their unique way they are experiencing their particular issue. I have recognised that working with the client to agree the best approach that suits their way of operating, is crucial for a successful outcome.

I also utilise my training and vast experience to promote insight and understanding so that clients can make connections with their hidden motivations or underestimated self resources. My aim is to leave a client empowered enough to continue with life confident they can deal with their challenges.

Couples Counselling

Couples therapy is quite distinct and different from individual therapy. As an accredited member of the BACP, service manager and supervisor of counsellors, I know all too well that being appropriately trained in couples work, is one of the key requisites to ensuring a good standard of support is provided. In terms of my initial training, this was a relational approach which focused on how relationships are forged, maintained but also broken. My subsequent training in couples therapy continued this theme. It also taught me how to identify the behaviours, dynamics and missed signals that lead to relationship breakdown. Through the training I came to understand how to work with couples in the therapy room, the issues that couples specifically struggle with, and promote a coming together and healing. Whether you are feeling isolated or rejected in your relationship, can’t see eye to eye, dealing with the aftermath of an affair, trapped in a continuing cycle of conflict/repair or seeking to come to an amicable end, couples therapy may be an option. Through my work with couples, I have come to recognise that most often, couples misread each other which creates underlying wounds that often lead to conflict or deterioration in the relationship. My aim would be to remain impartial but to support the relationship to move forward in the best way possible through the de-escalation of emotions, promoting respect and enabling communication.

Online Counselling

I have completed training in online therapy and provide counselling for individuals or couples via webcam or text chat. My previous background in Information Technology has given me appropriate skills in working with this communication tool to ensure the therapy is conducted in a safe manner. The online therapy I provide is conducted via a fully end to end encryption based programme. For more details please enquire.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
