About me

As a Chartered Psychologist and Counselling Psychologist my training has been integrative. This means I have studied a range of psychotherapeutic approaches including psychodynamic, relational, person-centred and CBT approaches. This enables me to tailor the therapeutic approach I offer according to the individual needs of my clients. I am able to offer both short term (up to twelve sessions) and longer term work.

Training, qualifications & experience

As a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) I have a Practitioner Doctorate (PsychD.) in Psychotherapeutic and Counselling Psychology from the University of Surrey and an Honours degree (BA Hons) in Psychology from the University of Reading. I work to the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the British Psychological Society (BPS). I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Counselling Psychologist.

I attend regular continuing professional development courses. Some of the courses I have attended this year are: working with depression, attachment issues and new advances in working with trauma including working with dissociation and childhood abuse.

I have worked across a range of settings including the NHS in primary care, where I worked with a wide range of personal, psychological and behavioural difficulties. I have also assisted individuals in psychologically adapting to health conditions such as diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, I have worked in a University Counselling service with a varied range of difficulties including cultural issues, stress related disorders, developmental issues and addictive issues. I have both research and practical experience of working with individuals who have close relatives with mental health issues. I have a particular interest in working with attachment issues and complex trauma. I am a member of the ESTD-UK (European Society for Trauma & Dissociation).

Furthermore, I also have extensive experience within the voluntary sector including crisis work, management and training of volunteers, outreach, working with a family support agency and a community counselling service.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

The above list is certainly not exhaustive, rather it gives a flavour of some of the issues people bring to counselling. Sometimes I find that people come to counselling because they just feel something is wrong, perhaps they feel unhappy or discontent in some way. If something is causing you concern, then counselling may help. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss in more detail whether counselling might be a useful option for you.
